The Poison Of Religion

The Poison Of Religion
The Last Supper (Leonardo da Vinci)

Stop. Stop letting your hate get in the way of your religion -- no matter what your belief is: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, heck even if you're part of that religion that worships a flying spaghetti monster (pastafarianism). Religion was never meant to spread hate, yet when we look back on history, when we look at the media today, that's all religion seems to do.

Why are we freely passing judgment on others when God is the only one that can do that, and even if you aren't religious, what do you gain from that? What is the point of pointing at someone and denying their right to be who they want to be just because it's different from who you are?

I am Christian, so please excuse me for speaking primarily from a Christian perspective, but Jesus never said, "Deny others because they are different." He never said, "If someone is Muslim or foreign do not let them into your country, into your home, into your heart," and He sure as heck did not say, "Let's end those Muslims." Instead, He said one the most important commandments is to "love your neighbor as yourself." Jesus didn't command people to carry out mass shootings and genocides and wars in His name. He ate with the outcasts, He preached to all no matter the social class and He loved unconditionally. So why aren't we loving unconditionally? Why aren't we actively trying be like the Holy God we worship?

Religion is not a war, it's a relationship.

Matthew 25:35-40 says:

35 'For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’"

I'm speaking to you as a human, as a person that is genuinely concerned and confused by this world: why aren't you spreading more love? Are you actively trying to make the world a better place, or are you passively letting people make outrageous comments? I've said it before, and I'll say it again: we need to demand more from the media and more from ourselves. We need to stop allowing hateful rhetoric towards minority groups and religious groups to be spread. We need to show the world that humanity is not inhabited by a species that is obsessed with speculation and anything to do with the Kardashians.

I wonder how broken God's heart is when He looks down and He sees us all screaming and shouting over these imaginary borders, turning away children, fighting over one Amendment and still praying to Him to fix it all when He's empowering us to do just that.

If you're Christian just be more like Christ. If you're religious, just spread the love of your religion. I promise it's that simple. We're all imperfect, we're all hypocrites, and that's okay -- but let's not let our hypocrisy get in the way of loving others for being the beautiful humans that they are.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
