Donald Trump. You all know that name. You all know him as a business tycoon, reality T.V. star and now Republican presidential candidate. Call me crazy, but one of those characterizations doesn't mesh well with the others and I think you all know which one I'm talking about.
I remember when Trump first announced his candidacy for the 2016 election; I honestly laughed and thought he was just joking around. I was horribly wrong. A few months into his campaign, I stopped and realized he was being serious. Although, I'm still holding out for him to come forward and say that it was a giant prank, that it was an elaborate display of satire used to highlight the core issues we still face today in American society: racism, sexism, elitism, etc.
If Trump doesn't admit to intricate political trickery and actually ends up winning the election, I think it's safe to say that America is going straight to hell in a handbasket. Many people would angrily and adamantly disagree with me because they think he's going to "Make America Great Again."
Let's talk about that for a second: "Make America Great Again."
To those who plan on voting for Trump, you do realize that he's basically saying America sucks, right? I bet if he led his campaign with that synonymous slogan, everyone would be absolutely livid. Although, he has said way more offensive things than that and people still somehow want to vote for him. Trump saying that he will "Make America Great Again" is also implying that he and he alone will be the one to fix it. Do you know who else based his campaign around a similar slogan and also scapegoated a particular group of people? Adolf Hitler.
I've gotten a lot of crap from people when I compare Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, but can you blame me? I'm not saying that Trump, if elected, will place Latinos into labor and internment camps and partake in genocide, I'm simply saying that the way in which both men campaign are eerily similar. Prior to Hitler's tyranny, many people would've considered him a fascist; the Oxford Dictionary defines 'fascism' as "an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization." Trump, and therefore his supporters, are incredibly nationalistic.
Perhaps some of you don't view nationalism as a negative thing, but I urge you not to confuse nationalism with patriotism. Nationalism is an extreme, radical form of patriotism where one believes his/her country to be superior to all others, which can also be defined as jingoism. Contrarily, patriotism is simply having love for one's country.
Trump's rhetoric has both implied and explicitly presented nationalistic ideologies. He has so recklessly and irresponsibly talked about the use of nuclear weapons with zero consideration of the magnitude of the consequences weapons of mass destruction cause. He has made racist, negative comments about Mexicans and the Chinese.
Along those lines, how do you expect someone who is so ignorant and downright disrespectful of non-Americans to be diplomatic with other world leaders? I could go on, and on, and on. Bottom line: Trump is a fascist.
Moving on, let's talk about Trump and women.
There are plenty of examples I could choose from that portray Trump as a misogynist, but here are a few direct quotes that I think completely capture his true, sexist colors:
1. "It must be a pretty picture, you dropping to your knees."
2. "Rosie O'Donnell is disgusting—both inside and out. If you take a look at her, she's a slob. How does she even get on television? If I were running The View, I'd fire Rosie. I'd look her right in that fat, ugly face of hers and say, 'Rosie, you're fired.' We're all a little chubby but Rosie's just worse than most of us. But it's not the chubbiness—Rosie is a very unattractive person, both inside and out."
3. "You know, it doesn't really matter what the media writes as long as you've got a young and beautiful piece of ass."
4. "All of the women on The Apprentice flirted with me, consciously or unconsciously. That's to be expected."
5. "When you're a star, [women] let you do it. You can do anything... Grab them by the pussy. You can do anything."
Did you throw up reading those? I sure did.
If I continued to write about the extent of Donald Trump's moral ugliness and ignorance, I would be here all night. Someone once told me that there's always a turning point during the campaigns and debates leading up to the election that truly determines its fate, like when the Romney bar video was leaked. My question is how hasn't that point been reached yet? How haven't any of the offensive, outrageous things Donald Trump has said not been his downfall yet? What will it take if making racist and sexist comments and not paying taxes won't? Will he have to punch a baby? Kick a puppy? What?
I don't understand how such a monster—a monster who has never even been elected into any office, for that matter—can still be considered for the U.S. presidency, but then I thought about it and realized that the only reason he even has a chance at the Oval is because he has a great deal of support from the American people, and that truth is even more terrifying than the man himself.
If Donald Trump becomes President, I can only hope that he'll be impeached and someone will say, "You're fired!"
