It's My Right To Have And Share My Right-Leaning Opinions And I Shouldn't Be Afraid To

Don't judge me as a Republican or a Democrat. I'm a human. Treat me like one.

It's My Right To Have And Share My Right-Leaning Opinions And I Shouldn't Be Afraid To
Gracie Dougherty

Yikes. Politics. I know it's a very touchy subject and I'm actually pretty nervous to publish this article.

But, that's the thing. I shouldn't have to be nervous and worried about this article. I shouldn't have to be afraid to tell people my views, my opinions, or my political affiliations. But unfortunately, that's how it goes when you're a conservative Republican female in college.

There, I said it. I affiliate with the Republican party.

And when I tell people that, a lot of people groan, give me a weird look, or ask me a million questions about why I would ever choose to be a Republican. Why? If someone tells me that they are liberal or a Democrat, I have no opinions. And I certainly don't judge them, I certainly don't give them the stink eye.

So why do I receive that?

I'm currently in a politics class in college. Every class is full of plenty of discussions where I hear all sorts of opinions. Although, the large majority of the views and opinions shared are more liberal. I rarely hear any conservative opinions shared. I'm not one to be quiet in class; I raise my hand, I answer and ask questions. But not in this class. I stay quiet and I have never once shared an opinion or questioned someone else's because I'm too worried to. I'm worried that the class will start unnecessary arguments with me, simply because my opinions differ from their own. I don't argue with anyone, I don't roll my eyes or snicker when I hear an opinion that I don't share.

So why do people do that to people with conservative views?

Even my professor has expressed a Republican opinion of his and the whole class turned their heads to each other in shock. Why? What is so wrong with being a Republican or being conservative? What is so wrong with having different political views? I don't judge people if they have a different opinion than me. I keep quiet or I start a constructive, civil conversation.

Why am I not treated the same way?

I've been told not to vote simply because I'm a Republican. Why? It's my right to vote regardless of who I vote for. People should encourage others to vote whether they are voting Republican or Democrat. Everyone has the right to vote so no one should bash others for voting Republican... Republicans are doing their civic duty and using their voice like Democrats.

Opinions are opinions and we all are allowed to have and express them, and there is really no reason to put down those who don't have the same opinion as you. It's my right to have and share my views and I shouldn't have to be scared to voice them. There is absolutely nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree, and I believe that is something we all should agree on, regardless of political affiliations.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
