When scouring the internet for new music, I struggle finding good suggestions. My friends with similar tastes to my own are too lazy to find out the names of any songs that they hear on the radio (“Ah… what’s that one song… I love it… I’d know it if I heard it!”). Then there are your artsy friends who compile endless playlists and mix tapes and try to steer themselves away from any music that might make them seem like they’ve ever turned on a Top 40 station (“It doesn’t surprise me that you haven’t heard this one. You’re super into like… Ke$ha, right?”).
I am not an expert. I’m still not sure what “trap” music is. I enjoy Taylor Swift. In junior high I thought I was edgy because I listened to Fall Out Boy. So, if you’re looking for a trendy playlist, you will probably think this is horribly lame and go back to lurking on Spotify for the next big folk-rap crossover star. For now, here is a list of songs that are fun to dance to and have names that are easy to remember.
- Gibberish – MAX featuring Hoodie Allen
- Possibly the only male artist out there today that can give Nick Jonas a run for his money, MAX is a fresh face from New York who’s dance moves are unparalleled. I was lucky enough to see him perform this song live a few weeks ago, and the guy’s got pipes. Plus, he did a split onstage. I respect a man who can do a good split.
- What Kind of Man – Florence + the Machine
- Florence Welch and her band came together in 2007 in London and caught fire almost immediately. By the end of 2008, they had released two hit singles, Kiss with a Fist and Dog Days are Over. Their most recent album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, was released on June 2nd in the U.S. What Kind of Man is its powerful lead single.
- Half Light – Wilkinson featuring Tom Cane
- Last June, Wilkinson, a London-based DJ, released this chart-topping single off of his album Lasers Not Included. Weird music video, great song.
- Out of Mind – Tove Lo
- Most of you have probably heard of Sweden’s Tove Lo from her hits Habits (Stay High) and, more recently, Talking Body. As the protégé of prominent music producer Max Martin, Tove Lo penned songs for Icona Pop and Hilary Duff, along with Ellie Goulding’s hit Love Me Like You Do. Off of her EP Truth Serum, Out of Mind is one of her few singles that aren't about drugs.
- Harlem – New Politics
- Labelmates of MAX and Fall Out Boy, Danish rock outfit New Politics have toured with the likes of Pink, The Pretty Reckless, and Paramore. Harlem hit number 4 on the U.S. alternative chart when it was released in 2013. Their latest album, Vikings, is set to be released on August 14th with DCD2 Records.
- Favorite Record – Fall Out Boy
- Anyone who knows me will tell you that I couldn’t make a playlist without a Fall Out Boy song on it. I still love Fall Out Boy. However, I now know that liking them does not make me “edgy” or anything close to it. This is my favorite song off of their latest effort, American Beauty/American Psycho.
- OctaHate – Ryn Weaver
- This song will be stuck in your head for weeks. Ryn Weaver, a California native and former student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, caught the attention of producer Benny Blanco back in 2013. Soon enough, Weaver had posted her first single OctaHate online and was receiving high praise from the likes of Hayley Williams and Charli XCX. Her debut album, The Fool, was released on June 16th and peaked at number 30 on the U.S. charts.
- Cecelia and the Satellite – Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
- Andrew McMahon, formerly of popular rock bands Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin, penned this heartfelt song for his newborn daughter back in 2014. Too cute.
- Take Ü There – Skrillex, Diplo, and Kiesza
- Another artist with amazing dance moves, Norwegian vocalist Kiesza is best known for her hit single Hideaway. Throw her together with wildly popular DJs Skrillex and Diplo, and you have an instant classic.
- I Can’t Stop Drinking About You – Bebe Rexha
- While you may not recognize Bebe Rexha’s name, you will definitely recognize her voice. She provided vocals for Take Me Home by Cash Cash and Hey Mama by David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj and Afrojack. Not to mention, she’s penned songs for Madonna, Selena Gomez, Eminem, Rihanna, Tinashe, and Bella Thorne, including Eminem’s 2013 single “The Monster”. Rexha’s unique sound sets her apart, and her latest work I Don’t Wanna Grow Up is bound for success.
- Brother – NEEDTOBREATHE featuring Gavin DeGraw
- This song by Christian rock band NEEDTOBREATHE features Gavin DeGraw, an artist that we haven’t heard much from since his string of hits back in the 2000s. So if you were wondering what he was up to (you probably weren’t), you’re welcome.
- Simple Song – The Shins
- While including this song may make me seem cool and angst-ridden, that’s not exactly true. I uncovered this song when it was used as the soundtrack for the reveal of the Mother back on How I Met Your Mother. A scene for the ages.
- Anna Sun – WALK THE MOON
- Before hitting it big with Shut Up and Dance, WALK THE MOON released this as their first single back in 2010 off of their first album I Want! I Want! While it only reached number 118 on the U.S. charts, it paved the way for their later success.
- Geronimo – Sheppard
- By now you’ve probably heard this song by Australian indie pop outfit Sheppard. Total jam.
- Avalanche – Nick Jonas featuring Demi Lovato
- Including this song on my list will probably confirm to some that I have no musical taste. But, I mean, does anyone really do it better than Nick Jonas? The guy’s unstoppable. This is far and away the best song on his first solo album. And yes, that means its better than Jealous.
