Let’s face it. Moms are the best. Whether you need a best friend or a doctor, Mom has always been there for you. Sure, you’ve had your qualms and quips, but the fact is we all just need our moms every now and again. So what do you do when suddenly you’ve moved 12 hours away and won’t see her until Thanksgiving? These are the types of phone calls everyone has with their Mom to help survive the semester without them and figure out how life works.

The Gossip Call

This is the phone call that happens when you saw on Facebook that cousin so-and-so got engaged and you need to know all of the juicy details. It’s used when you need a healthy dose of hometown drama to keep up with the times. This phone call begins by making sure you both saw the past week’s episode of "Project Runway," and ends with hearing about whatever fresh torture the high school has in store for your younger sibling. By the time you hang up, you’re usually feeling pretty good about your life choices and how far away you are from family drama. Then you remember that you need to call your mom back and ask how much to spend on cousin so-and-so’s wedding present.

The Chef Call

This next phone call is related to all things food. It’s for when you finally get your first kitchen and suddenly realize that you only know how to cook mac and cheese and peanut butter sandwiches. This phone call happens almost exclusively in the grocery store or over your stove. Some FAQ’s include:

Have groceries always been this expensive?

What does a ripe avocado look like?

You do what to the chicken next?!

Thank god for mom dealing with relentless questions about how to make her famous brownies and for explaining that yes, it is a big deal if you accidentally switch baking powder and baking soda.

The Moocher Call

The Moocher Call happens when you’ve just taken a peak into your bank account and realize that you went to Starbucks one too many times this semester. Sometimes you just need a little extra grocery money, but other times you just need the Netflix password to keep binge-watching "Gilmore Girls." Would it really be that bad if you used your mom’s Amazon Prime account to get those textbooks for two-day shipping? It was an accident that your new wall decals ended up in that order too!

The Sick Call

More often than not, this is a text accompanied with a photo of your bruised up toe, with the caption, “Does this look broken? Please call me ASAP!” Even though Mom’s not a doctor, she’s definitely better than WebMD, who just told you that your back pain must be cancer. Somehow, Mom always manages to have the answers, whether it’s the perfect soup recipe for your cold or reminding you that you absolutely cannot take those two over-the-counter pills together. Mom even helps you with the stupid questions, like that time you thought you were allergic to cats and you were just now finding out about it. Word of advice: don’t complain to Mom about your hangover. She’ll give you her foolproof treatment, but she’ll never let you live it down at family Christmas.

The “How-Do-I-Adult” Call

Being an adult is hard! How has your mom been doing it all along? There are so many things that you now have to do that you’ve never really thought of before. Like, how do taxes work? Should you get a savings account? Money aside, this phone call is also necessary for when you can’t get that coffee stain out of the carpet, or your favorite shirt has a hole in it that you don’t know if you can fix or not. Even though Mom’s quick fixes may be a bit strange, you know that you can trust them, because she’s been cleaning up your messes for years.

The “I-Just-Need-My-Mom” Call

Finally, this is the phone call when Mom is all you need. There may be tears, but that’s ok. Mom will be on the other side of the phone to dry them. She’s there to give you the best advice and help lead you on your way into being a full-functioning adult. So the next time you call her, remind her how much you love her and you miss her. Then you can beg her to come visit you for a weekend. Oh! And remind her to bring that thing that you left on the floor of your closet!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
