Coming out of Davidson University, and standing 6’3 tall you have the best shooter of all time Wardell Curry. Or Steph Curry. Or Chef Curry. You also have the now two-time MVP on the best team on the NBA. The Golden State Warriors, who went 73-9 over a season.
Now that he is now labeled the best player in the game a large amount of people, many critics have now expressed their opinion on the unanimous MVP. After, coming being overlooked his whole life, he has now earned the right to be one of the best players in the game. I can’t stress this enough, he had the best offensive season ever. He averaged 30 points, efficiently. He also made 402 threes which breaks his own record for a season. He broke this record three times. While, shooting is his specialty, getting all his teammates involved is one of his abilities that gets overlooked.
By attracting so much attention from defenders, he usually finds the open player in the offense. He also leads the league in steals. A lot of his critics say that he doesn’t play defense but that’s essentially because he doesn’t have to in their scheme. Their shooting guard Klay Thompson is versatile enough and is better suited to check their opposing point guard. Therefore, this is the reason Steph doesn’t check opposing point guards like Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, and Damian Lillard. By him not checking these elite point guards, he escapes from losing a lot of energy that could be used on the offensive end. Although Steph, is not the greatest defender, he’s smart and is always their to make the big play or big steal when the team needs it.
He gives consistent effort, plays within himself and within the system, doesn’t try to do things he knows he doesn’t have the ability to do and uses positioning. He isn’t going to shut anyone down but he can hold his own. When watching Steph Curry, you have to appreciate that he’s transcendent. There have been only a few players that have really altered and changed how the game has been playing. The most popular is Michael Jordan, then many others follow including Shaq, A.I, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and now Steph. The reason why Curry’s popularity is so high is because he doesn’t have any unique or abnormal physical features. Players like Lebron James, Kevin Durant have size that makes them practically unstoppable. Steph is relatable to plenty of kids because they don’t have this size. Steph doesn’t dunk much, he just shoots ridiculous three pointers and finishes at the rim better than most big men.
The reason I feel like Steph has so many haters is because fans of other players are now feeling threatened that he is taking over the game. Steph also doesn’t showcase a lot of strength on the court, therefore sometimes he is deemed soft. If Steph Curry wins a ring this year, he would have the same amount of rings as Lebron James. And he already has more rings than my favorite player Kevin Durant. Therefore, I think fans are feeling a little insecure when they see Steph taking over the game, like he did when came back in the Portland series. When asking most fans why he isn’t the best player in the game, most responses include “He only has been doing this for two years, players like Lebron has been doing this for 12 years consecutively”, although this is true, this response is more suited for if you’re ranking top players of all time. When speaking of the “best” player, you are speaking in present terms, as of today. After Lebron James, it was supposed to be Kevin Durant or Anthony Davis and out of nowhere it became Steph Curry. The other day Lebron James spoke on Steph Curry and this was his comments. When he differentiates valuable and best player of the year he basically admits that Steph is the best player in the game right now.
"I think sometimes the word 'valuable' or best player of the year, you can have different results," said James, a four-time MVP."Look at Steph's numbers," he said. "He averaged 30, he led the league in steals, he was 90-50-40 [shooting percentages from the free throw line, field and beyond the 3-point line], and they won 73 [games]. So, I don't -- do you have any debate over that, really, when it comes to that award?”
Also, Curry became the first player, at any position, to average at least 30 points per game (he finished with an NBA best 30.1) while playing less than 35 minutes per game. Legends like Magic Johnson, has stated that he has the chance to be one of the best ever if he keeps it up.
