Do you ever find yourself trying to get some piece of work done, but you can't seem to make progress? Each time you start working on it, you make about a minute's worth of progress only to find yourself scrolling through your social media network of choice, browsing over the same posts that have filled your news feed all day? Then you have that frustrating realization that you've just wasted another five minutes, and the work is still right where you left it.
The good news is that you're not alone. I catch myself doing this all the time, and nothing is more frustrating (except for stubbed toes, of course). The better news is that there's an even easier fix. It's as easy as celebrating the moments that you catch yourself doing the wrong thing.
Why? Because as soon as you've noticed that you're distracted, you can re-focus your attention on whatever it is that you're hoping to do. This isn't just important for productivity, though, it will improve your relationships with others as well.
The late philosopher Simone Weil struck gold when she wrote "Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity." There is no better way to show someone you appreciate them than by being present and attentive in your interactions.
But wait, it gets better yet. We can pay attention to ourselves. In doing so we are being generous with ourselves. Listen to yourself. If you're tired, take a nap. If you feel like you need a workout, get yourself into the gym. If you're stressed because you have a bunch of work to do, get down to work! Simple as that.
Our conscience is a far better guide than we give it credit for, and by listening to ourselves we will be happier, healthier, and more fulfilled. Oh, and again, attention doesn't cost a penny.
