It seems like everyone has a goal that they wish to achieve, whether that’s an academic, fitness, personal, or professional goal. We create these goals with the end in mind, but it can be hard to start on the journey to achieving these goals. In our lives, we may encounter obstacles that temporarily prevent us from immediate achievement. What do we do: do we give up? Or do we continue on?

Sometimes the easiest thing to do in order to avoid these obstacles can be to give up entirely. If we don’t even try, then what is there to lose? I say that we need to transform this mindset into one that is more progressive and active.

If we never attempt a task that may assist in achieving a goal, then we may never get to see the impact that goal may have had on our lives.

Although obstacles can be present in every task that we take on in our lives, we need to overcome the initial barrier that may be presented as fear. The fear of what might happen can prevent us from pursuing a goal. What if we try and fail? Then what?

The barriers that can deter us from achieving a goal can seemingly be hard to overcome. They can seem overwhelming, and the goal can seem further away.

Facing these barriers can be intimidating, but we do have the power to defeat them.

With perseverance and dedication, goals can seem a lot closer and more attainable. In order to overcome a barrier, first, remind yourself of how important the goal is to you. When you are reminded of the importance and why you created the goal in the first place, it may only get easier from there. Second, realize that you can overcome a barrier because of your willingness to achieve this goal. When you are finally faced with the barrier, work your hardest because you know how much a goal that you have set for yourself will positively impact your life.

There may be fear in starting your journey to achieve the goals, but getting started can put you on the right path and get you prepared for the challenges along the way.

You have set this goal for a reason. You are strong, and you can do it! Although it can be easier said than done, starting a goal and approaching it with a plan can help with the process of facing barriers.

The next time you set a goal for yourself but are hesitant to begin, remember that you want whatever is the main achievement of the goal. You want to better yourself somehow, and you shouldn’t let obstacles stop you from doing this! Create goals with the realization that you will face barriers, but through courage and determination, can conquer these barriers and commit to your desire to achieve the goal.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
