An Open Thank You Letter To My Best Friend

Maintaining long-distance friendships are difficult during college, but you've never left my side.

An Open Thank You Letter To My Best Friend
Katie Pelton

Dear Best Friend,

Thank you for never giving up on me. You've been there for me since day one, and I know I can always turn to you no matter what is going on in my life. Although throughout most of the year, we are 131 miles away from each other, you've never forgotten me or replaced me.

I'm sorry for getting jealous when you hang out with other friends, or when someone tags you in a Facebook post that seems a little too friendly, or when someone else refers to you as their best friend. But lets be real, we've been best friends since we were five years old and I don't think that will change any time soon.

Thank you for understanding that I have to leave you during the school year. Even though we don't talk every day, we don't have to. Because every time we see each other again, we pick up right where we left off. Thank you for drinking wine, laying on the floor and talking about politics with me when I am home. I will never forget the night we drank a bottle of wine and talked about Obama, on the carpet of my old apartment and giggling until our stomachs ached.

Thank you for accepting and never judging me. I know that whenever I tell you that I have a confession to make, I won't be scolded or judged. You're always so supportive and understanding when it comes to confiding in you, and I cherish that more than you'll ever know. It's so hard to maintain a close relationship with friends from home after you leave for college, but you've never gone anywhere. You've always stayed right by my side, literally and figuratively. When I'm at school, I have the comfort of knowing that you're only a text or call away, and that helps me get through it, because you're my support system.

I know I don't tell you enough, but thank you for accepting me into your family and allowing me the pleasure of being apart of your life. When things are not going so well with my family, or whenever I'm heartbroken, or on the days I feel too depressed to get out of bed, you always make me feel like life is worth living. You've accomplished so much and you're an inspiration to me always.

Thank you for being the sunshine peeking through the clouds on my worst days, and the applause on my best days. I can't thank you enough for all that you've done for me, and gone through with me. The future terrifies me, but we agree all the time that it's us against the world, and with that always in the back of my mind, the future doesn't seem so scary as long as I have you in it.

Love,

Me

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
