An Open Letter To My Little Sis About College

Dear little one,

Where do I begin in this letter to you? There’s so much to say, but there’s not enough room to say everything. So let’s start here.

I’m writing this letter to you because I want to explain the college experience to you. The college experience is hard to explain. It can’t be explained in one word, one thought, or one paragraph. It’s different for everyone. You could say it’s an individual’s unique journey over the course of four years. There are peaks and dips. It’s kind of like a puzzle, you have to put the pieces together to create your own masterpiece in the end. You could say it’s a wild ride but, it’s worth it.

Even though there is a variety of definitions for the best four years of your life, there are things you need to remember along the way. These things you need to remember will make the great times memorable and the bad times bearable. In my personal experience, these things to remember have made an impact on my three years here thus far. And from the bottom of my heart, I think it will for you too.

The five things I want you to remember ALWAYS during college are:

1. Breathe.

I know it’s just one word but, this is one thing you need to remember that will go a long way for you. When things are hard and you feel like nothing’s going right, just close your eyes. Count to 10. Take a huge breath in. And breathe out. This simple technique will remind you that the bad things are manageable and you can conquer it. All you have to do is breathe.

2. It’s okay to be weak.

Now, I’m not talking about being literally weak where you put on that Mizzou 22. I’m talking about letting your guard down and breaking down. You don’t always have to be strong 100 percent of the time. It’s okay to let out a good cry here and there and to always find a shoulder to do it on. Just remember that it’s okay not to be okay.

3. The worst days are actually the best days.

Okay you’re probably thinking, “What the f*** Hannah?” But I know what I’m talking about here. Those days where one bad thing is happening after another are actually beautiful days. You’re learning lessons in life. You’re making mistakes. You’re gaining wisdom. You’re becoming a better version of who you are.

4. Live in the moment.

I know this is so cliche but, it’s true. Don’t forget to take advantage of the four years you have here. Appreciate those times where you go to El Rancho after a night out at Bengal's, or you dress a theme for a frat party. Just remember to stop and take a minute to look around you because you’ll never be where you are now.

5. Have fun.

I know this is basic but the last one is the easiest and simplest one to remember. These four years honestly fly by. So take every opportunity you have to enjoy your friends, your sorority, and most importantly, yourself. Live it up.

I know these four years are going to be your own special journey. I believe in you. I love you my little gingah!

Love,

Your Big Sister

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
