An Open Letter to My Sister Who Became My Bestfriend

You're pretty much my favorite person of all time in the history of ever.

I’ve always been a little rusty on telling people how I feel, but I am going to try my very best.

I should start first by asking: Where would I be without you? You have helped shape me into the person that I am today. You've always had my back in everything. You’re the person that I can tell anything and everything to. Just by looking at the expression on my face, you’re able to tell exactly what I am thinking. You’re my sister! You’ve been there since birth (literally), and you’ve stuck by my side through the good, the bad and the ugly. We know each other so well. You’ve been that one person in my life that I always run to when I need advice, a person to vent to or just when I have some major gossip to share. You never fail to make me laugh, even when I am feeling my worst, so shout out to you, sis.

Like any relationship, we still get into tiffs and arguments now and then. They never last long and are rarely serious. And we always have to ask each other, "Are we still fighting?" Because we are dying to tell each other something, and it’s too hard to go a long period of time without talking to you.

But besides all that, I wanted to say a much overdue thank you. Thanks for always standing up for me. Thanks for being there when no one else was. Thanks for always listening when I need someone to talk to. Thanks for dealing with my attitude on my bad days. Thanks for dreaming big with me, like our dream to someday open a café together or move to a town like Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls. Thanks for always going to Target with me, even when we’ve gone every day in the past week. Thanks for not judging me for how much retail therapy I participate in. (Or, thanks for hiding that judgement.) And most importantly, thanks for being there through it all, sis. I don’t know what I’d ever do without my other half.

Life wouldn’t be the same without you by my side.

God blessed me with a pretty amazing sister that, somewhere along the way, became my best friend. And for that, I am forever grateful.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
