Dear Mister,
Let me start this letter by saying that you are a lucky son of a bitch. The luckiest one I know. But while you are lucky now, if you hurt her, I will hurt you. There are some things that you need to know about this girl. Some things that you need to know about how your life will change and how hers will too.
You need to know that she loves with everything she has. She has been through a lot and she puts her all into it all. Whether it’s school, friends, family, or jobs, she is a go-getter. And when she puts her mind to it, she always comes out on top. It might not seem like it at the time, but she never loses. Sure, she has rough days, or tests that she might not do well on, but that degree will have her name on it, her future kids will be smart like her, her parents have always loved her, and she will kick major ass at any job that she has.
You need to know that she is special—she is one of a kind. She laughs all the time. She snores sometimes when she sleeps. She makes the cutest hand gestures when she is talking about something she loves. She is kind of a picky eater, but she loves pasta and salads with Italian dressing. She only eats cake if there is ice cream with it and she would eat sprinkles and cherries on everything if she could. Don’t let her food even touch a mushroom or she won’t eat it and if you want her to eat an onion, you have to hide it very, very carefully.
My sister is the most caring person anyone will ever meet. She has a hard exterior and sometimes doesn’t show her emotions. She might not cry when you think that she should, but she is feeling everything. She is the youngest sibling so she can be loud sometimes when she is trying to get a point across. Most of the time, people are watching out for her, even though she doesn’t need it. She has been a sounding board for many of her sister’s problems so she knows how to give great advice. She tells it like it is, so don’t look for things to be sugar coated.
She has dreams. Big, big dreams. No matter what she is doing, she wants to do something more. She loves to learn. She can dance, make jewelry, play the flute, do stand-up comedy, and she is the best Guinea Pig nail clipper I know. When she wants to do something, she does it, but she is smart enough to know what she needs to stick to. While she can do makeup and keep up with sports, she knows that in order to make a living, she needs to do something that will pay and because she is who she is, she will always be helping people. She wants to help animals, people, and the earth. As a nurse, she has had to do some things that I can’t even describe because I would throw up. We have a family dog because she wasn’t scared to pick up a flee infested stray in the neighborhood.
She has walked away from people before, but she stays for the right ones. She knows her worth and she doesn’t need you to show her. She was fine before you and she will be fine after, but she will be happier with you. While she is strong and independent, she is the opposite of cold. You need to know that you might not be making her whole but you are making her better. And that’s what she wants. She doesn’t need you, but if she lets you in, she sees something in you and she trusts you.
She has been with people before you, but they didn’t last. Maybe they were too reckless or maybe they weren’t mature enough or maybe they lied. And that is lucky for you. That means that you get to be with this wonderful woman. You get to see how amazing your life can be with this girl in it. But as great as this is, you shouldn’t think that she won’t call you on your shit. She will bust your balls and push your buttons, but she is so worth it. She will be annoying, but so will you. You will leave the toilet seat up, you’ll fart, you’ll play the music too loud, and you’ll start fights, so when she asks you to rub her back and play with her hair—do it, and thank your lucky stars that you’re the one getting to do it.
Most importantly of all, you’re going to be with my best friend, my second mom, my partner in crime, my second closet, my shoe thief, my music maven, and the weediest freaking person I know. You are going to be in charge of her heart. You are going to be in charge of not letting her down. You are going to be the one that she looks to, the one that she will run to after a hard day. You are going to be her best friend and lover all in one. You are going to have to make sure that she gets enough sleep and that she doesn’t get frustrated at the little things. She is the baby of the family. I have very few memories without her and if you screw that up, I will haunt you. I love this girl more than I have loved anyone. She is like my twin—I feel what she feels, but magnified by 100%.
So to you, you might be looking at the love of your life or a girl that you fell in love with. But you better not fall in love with her. You better grow to love her. Because people that fall together can fall apart, and no one wants that to happen. So please, love her with everything that you have because she will love you more than she should, more than she has ever loved anyone, and if she thinks that you’re worthy, I’ll try to think that you are too.
