You Don't Have To Be A "Sexy Something" For Halloween

" Mean Girls" stated it perfectly:

To the girls everywhere who don't want to be a "sexy something" for Halloween,

I guess "Mean Girls" summed it up perfectly: "Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no girls can say anything about it." But much to each girl's chagrin, people do say things about it. People are aware that you are dressing as a "sexy Tootsie Roll" because the costume looked "cute" in the package.

As Oct. 31 draws closer, you and your friends are constantly discussing what you will be for this year's Halloween. Some pop-culture references come up as your friends giggle about being "sexy Donald Trump" or "Miley Cyrus through the decades." They pull together ridiculous costumes, complete with duct tape and push-up bras as you sit on the sidelines, wondering how you can keep warm this Halloween.

It's perfectly OK to not want to be sexy for Halloween. You will not be considered "boring." You will not be considered "frumpy."

If anything, you will be considered "clever" or "funny."

Yes, there will be many girls around you who feel the need to put on their tightest pieces and flaunt everything they've got.

In today's culture, it is easy to feel pressured into pulling on the Spanx, the fishnets, and the animal ears. It's easy to dress up as a sexy schoolgirl or a sexy yoga instructor.

But what happened to all the creativity?

Has the world around us made it so difficult and uncomfortable to show up to a party in a clever costume?

Don't worry. There are plenty of reasons to not go as a "sexy something" to your first Halloween party.

First of all, it's the end of October. It is freezing. Last year, I remember walking to a party with my friends and almost freezing to death because it was snowing. Last year, I dressed as Belle from "Beauty and the Beast" and was in a blue dress with a white shirt underneath. And let me tell you, I was freezing.

This year, while thinking up Halloween costumes, all I could think about was, "What can I wear that is cute but also warm?"

(Stay tuned for Halloween "Top Gun" photos, where I will be donning a full, warm, and toasty flight suit.)

Second, wearing a "punny" costume is also a great conversation starter at parties! It is always fantastic when somebody comes up to you to try and guess your genius creation. There are many fun and cute ideas on the internet for both boys and girls!

Trying to fit in with the crowd by being another Playboy Bunny can get old, and many girls are ready to break the mold and start to invent new hilarious costumes.

Why not stand out in the crowd?

Halloween is a time when you can be anyone or anything you want to be. Why not be clever about it?

Suit up and stay warm, my friends!

And have a very scary Halloween!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
