Dear Alabama Fans,
Clemson fans know how you feel. We’ve been there… just last year. We were at the top all season. We had an incredible undefeated season. The Tigers wanted to win, but you wanted it more. This year, the switch was flipped. You were at the top, undefeated, and ready to win, and the Crimson Tide put up a great fight. We know how that feels.
We know how it felt to get defeated by a lower ranked team. Some fans thought we had it in the bag. It was a hard-fought game, but we just couldn’t keep up. The better of the two teams did what they needed to succeed and to win.
On January 11, 2016, I watched the game in the basketball arena with thousands of other Clemson Tigers fans. When we lost, the crowd fell silent. There wasn’t a dry eye in that arena. It was devastating.
I’m sure campus isn’t as lively as it typically is, because that’s how it was here, too. It seemed as almost if we had all lost someone incredibly important to us. Professors started class off with, “I know you’re having a tough time right now, but we have to move on.” I wish I was kidding.
Clemson football means everything to this city, campus – its students, alumni, faculty, etc., and all of the hard-working athletes. I’m sure it’s the same way in Alabama. Our schools have some of the best and largest fan bases in college football. To our fans, it’s more than just a sport. It is more than win or lose.
I hope your loss wasn’t as painful as ours. To be fair, at least you've won four titles in the past 10 years. We had to wait 35 years for ours.
Victory is sweet, but only those who know how it feels to lose can truly appreciate that success. We know the crushing feeling of losing. I think that’s what motivated the Tigers to win it all this year, knowing the feeling of losing to an amazing team. They didn’t want to let that happen again.
No matter what, that National Championship game was some damn good football. Both teams were amazing, deserving, and determined. It was a hard-fought battle until the very last second and we were lucky to have such a strong opponent to push to do more than we ever thought we could.
So keep your heads up, Alabama fans. Maybe we can go for round three in 2018.
Signed,
A Clemson Tiger Fan
