It's the best time of the year to be an Eagles fan! When we realize that our team won't make the playoffs, have nothing to do but look forward to next year, begin looking into the offseason, and watch our players win meaningless games in outstanding fashion!
We, the fans, might even see players like Nelson Agholor and Jordan Matthews play extraordinarily well, especially since they have played pretty terribly all season long. They, as well as pretty much the entire wide receiver corps, have been particularly awful this year, so Howie, Dougie P, and Carson will be looking to add receiving weapons on the outside this offseason.
There are plenty of options to draft or sign this spring, and for that reason, I can confidently say that one of the following wide receivers will be an Eagle next football season.
1. DeSean Jackson
There have been speculations that Philadelphia will have a reunion with the former Eagle, what with Kirk Cousins expecting a large payout this offseason, and Jackson's lack of production with the Redskins. Jackson has gotten older since his time with the Eagles, but he still has speed and big-play ability, as is evident whenever he plays Philadelphia. Don't think he'll want to reunite with his old team? Jackson has stated that he would be interested in a return to the team that drafted him, and that his grievances were with Chip Kelly, and not the city, team, or anything else.
2. Cordarrelle Patterson
Another speedy possession receiver, Patterson has been described by Jimmy Kempski as a "souped up Josh Huff." Patterson may not be a #1 wide receiver, but he would certainly be an improvement and much needed talent. Patterson is set to be a free agent this spring.
3. Corey Davis
Corey Davis, much like Carson Wentz, has been criticized for being successful in college against lesser competition, but Davis still brings intensity and talent to the wide receiver position. Davis, if drafted to the Eagles, appears to have the skill set of a #1 wide receiver, but is usually mocked to be drafted in the first round before Philadelphia has the chance to get him. Oh, and did I mention that Davis has the NCAA record for career receiving yards in FBS history?
4. Dede Westbrook
Imagine if two Eagles jersey's this coming year were "Jackson" and "Westbrook" again! This Westbrook is much like a young DeSean Jackson, as he can take the top off of a defense with his speed and elusiveness. Upon watching his highlight reel, Westbrook repeatedly catches passes well ahead of opposing secondaries, as he torches corners and safeties alike. Westbrook also seems to have a knack for getting separation through agility and route running alone, so he is a threat for shallow routes as well. Westbrook has mostly been mocked for the second and third round of the draft this year. I imagine, if the Eagles drafted him, it would require a trade into the late second round.
Fun fact: last I checked, Westbrook wears braces.
5. Mike Williams
Williams, like Davis, possesses more of a first wide-receiver skill set. He has good size and can run with the ball after the catch. In the highlight reels, Williams seems like a hard runner with star potential. He reminds me of a more aggressive Sammy Watkins (and no, not just because they both went to Clemson). Williams could make a nice tandem with Jordan Matthews, and would probably catch more passes than his would-be partner as well. Williams is mocked to go in the first round, though it's a toss-up between him and Corey Davis as to which will be the first wide-receiver drafted.
I believe that one, or even two, of these wide-receivers will wear an Eagles jersey next year. I am most confident that it will be DeSean Jackson or Dede Westbrook, but I would love to see a combination of a speed-type and a possession receiver. A pairing like Williams and Jackson, in my opinion, is what Howie Roseman and Doug Pederson should strive for. If Howie is feeling really ballsy, which he usually is, I could very much see him drafting two receivers, like Davis and Westbrook. The only downside, of course, is that the Eagles need help on the offensive line, the secondary, and the defensive front, so I'm sure this fantasy of mine will not come to fruition. Just like my fantasy of a playoff birth.
Note: I left out Alshon Jeffery because I doubt he will make it to free-agency. If he did, however, I do not see the Eagles signing him because of his inevitably steep price-tag.
