The 2016 Olympic Games kicked off on Friday night in Rio, Brazil. Over the next 17 days, more than 11,000 athletes will be competing for the title of Very Best.
The athletes have been looking forward to this moment for their entire lives. It is a dream come true. For many, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the pinnacle of all they have been working towards. The blood, sweat, tears, time, money and sacrifice all comes down to this one event. The world stage. The best of the best. The Olympic Games.
It’s amazing how 11,000 athletes are facing one of the biggest events of their lives, and yet so many of us are completely oblivious and unaware of the monumental events taking place.
While I was never — I still am not — big into playing sports and have had about zero competitive spirit, I have always enjoyed imagining what it might be like to be one of the world’s best athletes.
On top of that, the Olympics were the only time in my life when my parents actually let me sit and watch TV for longer than an hour — which was probably equally as exciting to me as actually watching the games. I would never miss a beat and felt so cool that I saw “in real time” records being broken one after another.
