The Olympics just might teach us more than we know.

Olympics 2016: No Better Time

During the times of turmoil. Times in which we wonder what has happened to this world that we live in. Times where we question our security and the police officers that sacrifice their lives to protect the safety of the citizens of the United States. A time in which many do not feel safe. A time in which there are mothers and fathers that do not go home to their children. A time where we are left with so many unanswered questions. We are, without a doubt, facing a time in the world in which we don’t understand. We can’t decide who is at wrong or what is right. We can’t decide if police officers are justified in their split-second decisions. We can’t decide what our viewpoint in the upcoming election is. However, in this world of cant’s and unknown, we are all brought together as we sit down and watch world class athletes compete to represent their countries, the ideals they stand by, and the hard work they have accomplished. We see that their constant dedication pays off and that discipline is key to success. We see the struggle of some athletes, as well as the celebration of others. We see athletes, of many different religions, races, backgrounds, and beliefs come together and compete all at the same level.

What is the purpose of the Olympics? To show that the US can dominate in just another aspect of the world. To bring fame and fortune to the gold medal athletes. Or to bring together the world to show that we all are able to undergo hardships, struggle, and complications and yet we are still able to come together on common ground and celebrate each other’s successes. The Olympics couldn’t have come at a better time. We are able to see Michael Phelps persevere through struggle and yet train to remain at top. We see the first African American woman from the US win a gold medal in swimming. We see the faces of all countries, all working to represent the finest. The Olympics might be a game to see which country produces the top-tier athletes, but it also brings the world together. To show that together, anything is possible and that we are all alike in more ways than one.

That we are all like these athletes, working towards greatness and not stopping until it is accomplished.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
