With the Olympics in progress down in Rio, many have taken to their couches to watch the spectacle that only occurs every four years. Below I have brought together a list of trivia facts so that you can know more about the Olympics than is ever otherwise necessary.


1. The Olympics started in 776 BC in Athens.

2. There are 206 countries competing in the 2016 Olympics.

3. There are 306 events that can be competed in.

4. The five Olympic rings stand for the five major regions of the world.

5. Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all times.

6. 46 states are represented by Team USA.

7. 555 athletes were taken to Rio by the US.

8. Real solid-gold medals were handed out until 1912.

9. Women were not allowed to compete in the Olympics until 1900.

10. The first winter Olympics were held in 1924.

11. There were no Olympics in 1916, 1940 or 1944.

12. Rio is the first South American city to host the Olympics.

13. Golf returned as an Olympic sport in Rio after being absent for 112 years.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
