When you were younger and thought about college, what did you think? Did you envision it like the movies? Could you even really imagine it? If you were like me and used to believe life was like a movie, you thought you understood how hard school was and what parties were like. When you got to college, you realized life is not like the movies. School is definitely hard, and parties are crazy, but there were some underlying things you didn't think about (or maybe you did -- I know I didn't). One of those things you missed was definitely the sex life of many people on campus. If you're anything like me and have ever been in a conversation about sex, the topic of virginity usually comes up. When these people find out you are a virgin, they look at you like you're a unicorn.
People will ask why you're a virgin. People will tell you they're proud of you. People will laugh or make jokes. Some people will definitely still be staring at you like you're a unicorn. I've gotten pretty good at dealing with the jokes, often making the jokes myself. I have a solid answer for almost every question I have ever been asked about being a virgin. Every question on Cosmo's 24 Things to Never Say to a Twentysomething Virgin list is one I have been asked. The thing is, a lot of people don't know that it's pretty chill being a virgin.
People often don't realize that often it is a personal choice to be a virgin. Personally, I'm a virgin because I haven't found the right one (cheesy, I know). Everyone always assumes that virgins are doing it for strict religious reasons and are absolutely the weirdest people ever. But it really just varies person by person.
What I am really trying to say here is this:
Being a virgin in college does not make you weird. It is your choice. I know I have felt the pressure to have sex a million times, but if you're not ready, you're just not ready. Don't feel like you need to hide it. If you want people to know, you can tell them. If you don't want people to know, don't tell them. It's your choice. They won't hate you. In this day and age, movies portray sex in a way where it is not emotionally complicated and special. I promise it will be worth it to wait if that's what you want to do. On the other hand, if you want to have sex, go do it. More power to you, because it is your choice to do it.
And if I am forever known as the girl who wrote about her virginity for the Internet, so be it.
