It's the best time of the year. No I'm not talking about sweater weather, I'm not talking about winter or even Christmas—I'm talking about the Ohio State vs. Penn State game. For most Penn Staters and Buckeyes alike, this rivalry game is one of the most exciting of the season.
For us Nittany Lions this game is our 8 p.m. game AND White Out game—a combination of our favorite things here in Happy Valley. While many Buckeyes don't see this rivalry in the same light we do, things are a lot closer then the Buckeyes give us credit for.
Penn State didn't join the Big 10 until 1993. The Nittany Lions and Buckeyes had exactly seven matches pre-Big 10 era. Many consider pre-Big 10 era irrelevant because well...it kinda is. But regardless the rivalry started way back when and still rages on today.
Come to 1993 when the Nittany Lions and the Buckeyes come head to head as Big 10 rivals.
The Nittany Lions and the Buckeyes have played each other every regular season game since joining the Big 10-- showing how long the rivalry has been alive.
In 1993, Penn State headed to the ever disgusting Columbus to play Ohio State and unfortunately lost to the Buckeyes—but over the next seven years the Nittany Lions did not let that happen more than once, only letting Ohio State get one more win in that seven year time span.
1994 was a beaming season for Penn State, getting the largest margin of victory against Ohio State and an undefeated season with a Rose Bowl win.
Post 1990s, the two teams became more heated in terms of coaches. Ohio State had Jim Tressel and Penn State had Joe Paterno, easily two of the best coaches in the game at the time. The first time Tressel came to Beaver Stadium, he was in for a rude awakening with a Penn State win 29-27.
Penn State won the most consecutive games of the 103-year rivalry.
Each match up between 1912 and 1964, Penn State pulled out a big 'ole win on the Buckeyes with two of those games Ohio State not managing to gain a single point.
Penn State holds the largest attendance for the rivalry game in the one and only, Beaver Stadium.
With a record 109,839 fans, Beaver Stadium was packed to the brim to watch the Nittany Lions crush OSU 17-10.
There’s something about watching Penn State football in Happy Valley with 109,000 of your best friends that makes you proud to be a Nittany Lion. OSU did get a crowd of 105,713 one time but we still won so it must be rough to gather that many buckeyes to watch a defeat.
Two of the most memorable seasons, 2005, 2008 and our “Shared” Big Ten championships:
2005: 17-10, Penn State
2008: 13-6, Penn State
Even though we beat OSU both years head on, we’ll use the term “shared” Big Ten championships to be polite.
Highest scoring game? 1994, Penn State.
This one is pretty self explanatory- Penn State (63) Ohio State (14)
Ouch.
No matter which side of the fence you fall on, one thing rings true that a Penn State-Ohio State game is always one to look forward to. Given that it's in Beaver Stadium this year, the Nittany Lions will not disappoint.
