President Obama cemented ties with Cuba by enacting a new policy that will outlast his presidency. The policy will lift the Cold War trade embargo and allow Americans traveling to Cuba to bring home limitless amounts of Cuban rum and cigars.
Previously those traveling to Cuba were only allowed to bring back $100 worth of Cuban rum or cigars. While those traveling can bring back limitless amounts of rum or cigars, Americans will still be unable to purchase those items online and have them shipped to their home.
Another part of the policy, deals with American companies importing and selling to Cuban companies. Under the new regulations set by the U.S. departments of Trade and Commerce and Treasury, U.S. companies will have an easier time importing Cuban-made pharmaceuticals, U.S. agriculture companies will be able to sell their goods to Cuba and Cubans will be able to purchase American-made goods online.
The main goal for these regulations is for them to be irreversible, even after Obama leaves office. The establishment of numerous friendly relations with Cuba, will make it almost impossible for future administrations to cut ties without causing an uproar from U.S. businesses and citizens.
While many businesses are happy with the changes made by the Obama administration, others were expecting more from the recent deals. Many spoke out noting that they were hoping to see more changes including, the ability for Cuban citizens to open U.S. bank accounts and for an expansion of exports to Cuba.
These recent actions are another step in normalizing relations between previous Cold War foes. Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro have been working diligently since 2014 to end the fifty years of enmity.
