I Am Nothing Like The Girl I Was A Year Ago

Make sure you learn from the experience and never put yourself through anything similar.

It's unbelievable to look back and realize that I was a completely different person just about 365 days ago. I have always been that fun-loving, bubbly, happy-go-lucky girl with the drive to do anything she set her mind to. I have always been the kind of girl who tries to see the best in everyone and every situation, even if that makes her a little vulnerable or naive — the kind of girl who didn't realize she lost herself in the process of helping someone else.

One of the hardest things in life, I believe, is gaining the courage to walk away from a toxic situation. When we, as humans, are faced with a person or event that concerns us, we tend to find ourselves hoping for a positive outcome. We tend to believe that things will change or that the situation will eventually get better; in reality, we know that's the furthest thing from the truth. I think our conscience, deep down, always knows when something is truly wrong for us, regardless of how much our mind or heart tries to argue with it.

Always go with your gut.

It knows so much more than what we give it credit for. Typically, we tend to settle and remain in negative situations, even though we realize they are no longer good for us. We tend to fear change and the thought of the unknown when in reality, the next stage in our life is typically so much better than anything we could ever leave behind.

Positive, loving, supportive people are always the best medicine.

Once you finally are able to free yourself from those who no longer benefit you, surround yourself with these kinds of people. It may sound a little cliché, but the truth of it is remarkable. When you are surrounded by strong individuals who go through life with such knowledge and kindness in their hearts, you soon learn the tactics and strategies that have helped them become the incredible people they are today. Their strength is contagious. It allows you to grasp onto the idea that you can overcome any awful situation with grace and sanity. You will find yourself with a more positive outlook and healthier lifestyle habits, which eventually will have you feeling better than ever.

Reflect.

Now that you have come out on the other side of a rough situation, make sure you take the time to reflect on this experience. Be able to point out the red flags that you missed and learn to watch out for these markers in your future. There is nothing embarrassing about being naive and not knowing the harm of a bad situation, but make sure you learn from the experience and never put yourself through anything similar.

In the moment, I don't think you ever realize how toxic a situation can be, yet once time goes by, your mind is able to see things for what they truly are. It took me just about a year to be able to refresh my outlook and grow into a strong and confident individual, and I couldn't be anymore proud of that.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
