A Note To My Favorite Boys

A Note To My Favorite Boys
Arielle Gelman

On May 27th, I will officially be a high school graduate. You will probably find me fidgeting with the black cap that tightly hugs my forehead, or prancing around in heels to ensure that I will not stumble across stage when my name is called. I am anxiously anticipating this day, praying that I will not reenact the opening scene from The Lizzie McGuire Movie.

As I reflect on my high school experiences, I consider how far I have come. Transferring from a private academy an hour away, I was an incoming freshman who knew no one. I was a timid girl who sought acceptance and a sense of belongingness. I thought I was alone, and felt that everybody already had their own exclusive posses and cliques. However, I was wrong.

One of the smartest decisions I made was joining my high school tennis team freshman year. Through tennis, I developed life-long relationships with very special people. I became my coach’s favorite person to tease, and my teammates’ giddiest doubles partner. Although, outside of the tennis courts was where we all really bonded.

I will never forget the late nights of ping pong tournaments and manhunt, and the early mornings of boating and soaking up the sun. I will never forget how many popsicles you guys could eat in one sitting, or how many welts were left on each others’ backs after a game of sting pong. I will never forget how unique your tastes’ in music are, or how you guys can dance to any song without missing a single beat. Most importantly, I will never forget how hard you all made me laugh on a daily basis and how grateful I was to have met you.

As we embark on a new chapter of our lives, I look forward to surprising you guys when I visit. I look forward to tailgating and watching football games together. I look forward to grabbing lunch when we are all in town, and catching each other up with the latest stories. Above all else, I look forward to watching you succeed, and hearing about your achievements. Thank you for making high school a memorable four years, and thank you for being my favorite boys.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
