I know all of us girls have always dreamed of our wedding since we were little (or at least I did). We’ve thought of what to do to make it perfect and fun for everyone that is attending. For me, I always favored the style of more traditional weddings over the new “outside the box” style we see so often today.
After going to my first non-traditional wedding, I found that there were much more important things to worry about than simple traditions. Weddings shouldn’t be about pleasing other people. You know, the whole walking down the aisle to the wedding song, wearing a veil, matching bridesmaid dresses, heck, even wearing a white dress as a bride! If you want to walk down the aisle to a rock song, country song, or even just a plain old love song, then do it. If you want to ditch the veil because you want the back of your dress to show, DO IT. If you want your bridesmaids to wear different dresses, then I’ll say it again, do it! Listen, it is your wedding and your life. If doing something different makes you happy, then stick to what fits your personality and just do it.
After attending my cousins wedding this past weekend I can definitely say I was not prepared or expecting a different type of wedding. My cousin did not wear a veil, nor did she walk down the aisle to the normal song. None of her bridesmaids wore the same dress, and guess what, IT’S OK. It was actually the best wedding I’ve been to – simply because it reflected the personality of the whole reason why I was there: the bride and groom. No one knew what to expect. Most of it was very different than the image we all have of how a normal wedding was supposed to go. In fact, let’s stop with the “supposed to”. This phrase makes everyone feel like there should only be one way of getting married. No. There are thousands of different ways to celebrate love and commitment! Some people have a band, others have a DJ. Some people have an after party, some don’t. The beauty of weddings is that they are all different and unique to each individual. That’s what makes weddings so fun!!
At the end of the day, if you’re happy, the people closest to you should be happy too. So, when planning for a wedding, try doing what your heart tells you to do. Don’t spend time worrying about pleasing others before yourself. After all, this is one of the best days of your life, do it your way and nobody else’s.
