This Sunday, May 22, 2016 World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) will be having it’s annual Extreme Rules pay-per-view event live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The show is only available through the WWE Network streaming service which is only $9.99 a month. You can stream the WWE Network through numerous streaming devices including Roku and Amazon Fire Stick. Extreme Rules is known for delivering amazing matches showcasing each professional wrestler’s ability and strength to perform. This pay-per-view will be going to the extreme; meaning that there will be many stipulations for the big matches.
In the main event, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns will be defending his championship against “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles in an extreme rules match. This match has no disqualifications, meaning you can use weapons including steel chairs, tables, and even ladders. Roman Reigns defeated AJ Styles earlier this month at WWE Payback, but this time around everything is legal. We do have to keep in mind the fact that Styles has his “Club” Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows who for sure will be having Styles' back, but Reigns is not alone either. He has his cousins Jimmy and Jay, The Usos on his side. too. Raw ended last week with AJ Styles hitting Reigns with the Styles Clash on top of a steel chair. With all the issues surrounding this match anything can happen when Reigns attempts to prove once and fall that he is better than AJ Styles.
The next big match will be for the WWE Women’s Championship, as the champion Charlotte will be defending her title against Natalya. This match will be a submission match where the only way to win is to make your opponent tap out. This match will also be interesting because Charlotte’s father, two time Hall Of Famer “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair, will be banned from ringside. This will play a pivotal role in the match since Charlotte has used her father many times to gain wins over different opponents, including Natalya. Charlotte defeated Natalya earlier this month at WWE Payback, with the help of her father and referee Charles Robinson, when Charlotte had Natalya in the Sharpshooter and Robinson called for the bell even though Natalya did not tap out. This time Natalya will have a better chance at winning since Flair will not be at ringside, but if “The Nature Boy” decides to come down to the ring, Charlotte will lose her title. Raw went off the air with Natalya putting Charlotte in the Sharpshooter and Charlotte tapped out. If this happens this Sunday, Natalya will be our new WWE Women’s Champion.
“The Lunatic Fringe” Dean Ambrose will be taking on “Y2J” Chris Jericho in a special Asylum match. These two have traded blows for weeks with Ambrose ripping, and ruining Jericho’s $15,000 jacket. Jericho gained retribution by putting Dean in a straightjacket on SmackDown! and beating him to a pulp. This Sunday the two will compete in an Asylum match where the two will be locked in a steel cage, no way out, with many different weapons including a plant, a barbed wire baseball bat, and a steel pipe. The only way to win is by pinfall. This match will sure be a great one with both trying to prove their points. Jericho believes he is “The best in the world at what I do”, where Dean Ambrose wants to prove to Jericho that he is a madman that will stop at nothing to get revenge of Jericho. This match will be extreme!
The WWE United States Champion, Kalisto, will be defending his championship against the “Bulgarian Brute” Rusev who will have “The Ravishing Russian” Lana in his corner. Rusev won a title shot when he won a battle royal on Raw. Rusev has made it his mission to destroy the high-flying champion. Kalisto has been proving that size does not matter, as he has taken on all-comers including big men like Ryback. Kalisto has a great chance at winning, but he will have to look behind his back, due to Lana being in Rusev’s corner. She has proven to play a role in matches. She is known for throwing her shoes, and throwing water on Rusev’s opponent. Will Rusev’s power and his girlfriend Lana prove to much for Kalisto, or will Kalisto overcome the odds and defeat Rusev? We’ll find out this Sunday.
The WWE Tag Team Champions, The New Day (Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods), will be defending their championships against The Vaudevillians (Aiden English and Simon Gotch). The New Day have been champions since last July. They have become a fan favorite with their humorous promo’s and their Booty-O’s cereal. But just because they are funny does not mean they cannot cause damage in the ring. Their opponents, The Vaudevillians, represent what they believe is long gone: real men. They want to bring back the bygone era, the late 1800’s when “men were men”. These two live in the past with their black and white entrance. These two are for sure nothing to take lightly as they have taken out the champions these past two weeks, brutally attacking the champions. Will the New Day lose their titles to “real men” or will the New Day send the Vaudevillians back to the 19th century for good?
The WWE Intercontinental Championship will be on the line in a Fatal 4 Way match as the champion, The Miz with his wife, Maryse, defends his title against Kevin Owens, “The Swiss Superman” Cesaro, and Sami Zayn. The Miz won the title the day after WrestleMania when his wife, Maryse distracted the then Intercontinental Champion, Zack Ryder. The Miz went on to defeat Cesaro at Payback when Sami Zayn attacked Kevin Owens who was at ringside, which distracted Cesaro, allowing The Miz to roll him up and get the win. Shane McMahon made a triple threat match at Extreme Rules between The Miz, Cesaro, and Kevin Owens. But before the match could be made, Sami Zayn asked to be involved. After beating The Miz, Zayn was allowed to be involved in the match. “The Swiss Superman” is a powerhouse in the ring. Can he use his insane athletic ability to defeat all 3 of these athletes? Can Kevin Owens prove that he is the best and defeat his former best friend Sami Zayn and the other three men? Can Sami Zayn prove that Owens’ win over him was a fluke, and take the championship? Or, with the help of his wife Maryse, and the drama between the competitors allow The Miz to retain his championship once again?
Finally, on the Extreme Rules Pre-Show, Dolph Ziggler will be going one-on-one with Baron Corbin in a no-disqualification match. Corbin has been brutally assauliting Ziggler for weeks. Now it’s Dolph’s time to finally put an end to the newcomer. Will Corbin come out on top and prove nothing can stand in his way? Or will the veteran Ziggler teach Corbin a thing or two?
Extreme Rules is shaping up to be a great pay-per-view. Be sure to tune in this Sunday at 7:00 for the pre-show, and then 8:00 for the start of the show. The one night a year the WWE goes extreme! Extreme Rules 2016!
