These six youngins are finally making their dreams come true: playing in the NHL.
But the fact that they're new is no reason to focus on their age. Just one full week into the 2016-17 season, these rookies are already on fire. Now it’s just a matter of seeing who wins the Calder Trophy.
Brandon Carlo (Boston Bruins)
At 6’5” and 203 pounds, this American-born 19-year-old defender is taking the Bruins by storm. Lately the Bruins have been known for needing some defensive help, and it looks like Carlo might be their gem for this season. Alongside Zdeno Chara, Carlo gives us a reason to keep an eye on this defensive pair.
Mitchell Marner (Toronto Maple Leafs)
After his first two games, Mitchell Marner already had 10 shots on goal. Since his NHL debut, Marner has proven over and over again that age has nothing to do with skill. Fun fact: when he scored his first goal, his mom was in the bathroom but ran out crying when she heard everyone yelling her son’s name. It's okay Mrs. Marner; there will be plenty more goals where that came from.
Jimmy Vesey (New York Rangers)
Not only is Jimmy Vesey obviously an incredible athlete, but he also graduated from Harvard last spring. While still in school, Vesey denied signing with both the Nashville Predators in 2012 and the Buffalo Sabres in 2016 before becoming an unrestricted free agent and finally signing with the Rangers, the team he wanted all along. In his third NHL game, Vesey scored his first goal, which also happened to be a game-winning goal against the San Jose Sharks.
Zach Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets)
Zach Werenski scored a goal and an assist in just two games, while playing approximately 22 minutes each night. He was drafted No. 8 overall in 2015, and is a new key defenseman. Based on Werenski’s playing so far, the defensive future might be now, especially with Seth Jones and Ryan Murray alongside him. He’s only going to get better as he develops an understanding of the pace of the NHL.
Patrik Laine (Winnipeg Jets)
Patrik Laine, who was the No. 2 draft pick of the year at only 18 years old, scored his first goal against the Carolina Hurricanes, and then both his second third, and fourth goals against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Though he and No. 1 pick Auston Matthews have both said in interviews that they do not want to be considered “competitors,” it’s difficult not to compare them when Laine scores the winning goal against the Leafs in OT after Matthews gets denied a breakaway and shot on goal. This was also Laine’s first career hat trick.
Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs)
Not only did this 2016 No. 1 draft pick score four goals in his NHL regular season debut against the Ottawa Senators, but he scored the only four goals that his team had that night. His killer game made history, as Matthews is officially the first player in NHL history to score four goals in his regular season debut. Though the Leafs lost in OT, it was still an unforgettable night for the organization.
