Every year, when the holiday season is beginning to come to a close, there is the quick increase in similar resolutions. As the year comes to a close, many people will begin to think about what they didn't like about the past year and what they wanted to have more of. The lists can be long or they can have one main goal, either way, they all have one goal in mind: Self improvement. No matter what happened in the past twelve months, the changes that most people feel are necessary are attached to how they feel about themselves personally. Here are a few examples of these common resolutions.
1. New Year, New Me
2. Exercise
3. Eat healthy
4. Less technology
There is nothing wrong with these being the goals people set for themselves when they think change is needed. If they seriously believe that something is wrong with their diet or habits, then these are exactly the way to go for a positive alteration. However, the problem does not lie in the goal set, but the reason/ timing of the goal being set.
Within the first week of the New Year, there is hardly a person left that is not trying to change some aspect of their life in order to improve themselves in the light of the new year. Now, I am not saying that making resolutions at the beginning of the year is bad or should be refrained from. I am saying that this should not be the only time that people should feel the need to dedicate themselves to change something and try to fulfill their goal.
If someone feels unhappy with a part of their routine, then that dissatisfaction should be motivation enough to change in the moment they realize what the issue is. There is no reason for someone to wait until the year is over in order to make improvements. Deciding to dedicate time and effort to make a change in their life does not need to follow a timeline set up by society, it merely needs to follow the passions of the person being improved.
Resolutions are fun to make and the excitement of a new year can make it easier to stick to your goal and succeed, but for some the time line is not useful. There is not a perfect time to change your personality because you are not satisfied with how things are going, just like how there is not a right time to make a goal. If you want something, then work for it, even if it is in the middle of June and people think you are crazy. The most important thing is to do what makes you happiest with yourself.
