I remember after Christmas day, my family and I would sit around the kitchen table and make a list of our new year's resolutions. Our lists consisted of the typical resolutions: weight loss, good grades, become organized etc. But I stopped participating in this tradition years ago. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in setting goals and improving yourself.
I don’t believe in setting massive expectations for yourself at the time of year when you haven't built a foundation for change. For example, if your new year's resolution is to lose thirty pounds at the gym and you haven’t been consistent with going to the gym and eating healthy but you suddenly expect to start the new year with going to the gym, that is very unrealistic. You have to build good habits in order to achieve your goals. We should not treat a resolution as a totally life-changing thing, only paying attention to our goals at the end of the year and spending every ounce of our energy on creating these unrealistic goals for ourselves. Instead, people should make resolutions for themselves everyday or every week rather than once a year.
You should always work towards bettering yourself in every way possible. That being said, you do not have to wait for the beginning of a new year to better yourself.
