As 2016 is approaching quickly, we all start to think about what we want our New Year resolutions to be this time around. Last year's goal probably was to lose weight, the year before that was to probably stop cursing. Did any of them actually last until January 2nd? Probably not...
The problem is, everyone sets their standards way too high. More often than not, New Year resolutions are perceived to be these crazy, over-the-top goals that are just unrealistic and way too hard to achieve. So, everyone thinks they have to set these goals at such a high standard, and they think that at least trying, successful or not, is enough. PSA: trying is not comparable to achieving.
It is completely understandable if you had a bad year and you just want to erase the past and start fresh. That is a completely different story. But, the whole "set an unachievable goal and then once I fail, say try again next year" thing needs to stop.
I personally do not set resolutions every year due to personal experiences. I know I never will follow through with them after a week, give or take. So, instead, I simply just start fresh every year. I reflect on the bad times, the good times, the mistakes, and my accomplishments that the past year has brought. I think about what I can do differently and what I can do better to make this upcoming year better than the last.
Setting goals for yourself and trying to be the best version of you is key, but there is a big difference in setting small achievable goals and setting milestones for yourself. Everyone thinks that once January 1st comes and they say they will lose weight, that means they will automatically see results because it's written in black and white, and if they don't, they give up. But, everyone needs to understand that things take time. That is why New Year's resolutions don't work. You should enjoy your own successes each day and always strive to be the best you can be every day.
You don't need the start of a new year to change the person you are for the better. Whether it is in January, April, or November...you can change whatever you want, whenever you want.
