New Year, New Eats in Athens

New Year, New Eats in Athens

Now that second semester is in full swing, it is time to venture out of the meal plan and explore all of the delicious food that Athens has to offer. Named one of the best towns for foodies, it is almost a shame to be in Athens and not take the time to enjoy the amazing restaurants. It may be overwhelming, so here are a couple of places that I believe everyone must try before they graduate. Some are unique, some are new to the area, and all are delicious.

Just Pho... and More!

This cosy restaurant was the first place I tried the Vietnamese soup that has now become close to my heart. Personally, I love the pho ga, or the chicken pho, but there are over 10 different types of pho to choose from. As the name of the restaurant implies, the menu has much more then just pho. With a diverse selection of spring rolls, rice dishes and Vietnamese sandwiches, everyone can be sure to find something to eat here. If you are ready to step outside of your comfort zone, Just Pho is the place to go.

Pouch.

When you walk into the newest Downtown Athens establishment, it’s hard to focus on the menu because of how adorable the design is. From the multiple small tables with stools to the granite countertop bar, the vibe that you get when you walk into Pouch is unlike any other in the area. The menu is small, but I can assure you that you have never seen so many options of pie in your life. The pies are sold as individual flakey pies, and each person gets their own. The savory pies include chicken, beef, pork and are based off of pies from around the world. Many countries in Europe are represented, as well as a pie that has hamburger meat to represent the good ole’ USA. Once you’ve finished your meal, it is impossible to leave without dessert. The caramel cheesecake is sure to blow your mind with its thick crust and rich flavor. Even if you do not have room at the moment, take it to go! You don’t want to skip out on the full Pouch experience.

Iron Factory.

Korean barbecue is taken to a whole new level at Iron Factory, located on Washington Street downtown. The aromas of the many meats and vegetables sizzling on the table top Korean barbecue grills surround the entire outdoor walkway as you enter the restaurant. Once seated, you get to choose from the variety of meats and fish options to be cooked right in front of you. Each entrée comes with vegetables, rice and a salad, so you will not leave Iron Factory hungry. Authentic Korean bean sprouts and kimchi are cooked at the beginning of the meal, and then followed by the salads. The waiter then fills up the entire grill with chicken, beef, shrimp or whatever else your party decides to order. The chicken is one of the best I have ever had! And to end your meal with a sweet finish, the fried Oreos do the trick. Iron Factory is an authentic restaurant that provides a dining experience like no other.

I know that the new year brings many new personal expectations, and I encourage you to make one of them trying new places in Athens. We are fortunate that right outside of our door there are so many amazing places to eat, and it is selfish of us to not take advantage! As Tom Haverford would say, “Treat yo self” to not cooking or eating at the dining hall, even if it is only for one day a week or month. I promise you will not be disappointed. Bon apetit!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
