New Experiences, New Friends

Lessons learned in the first week of college

New Experiences, New Friends

A brief about me: My name is Summer Freeman and I am currently in the move on when ready program. I attend Sequoyah high school and Reinhardt University. I am a full time student at Reinhardt but I am only 17 and technically a senior in high school. To some that may not make sense but I never go to my high school and it is definitely a new experience for me. I have never moved therefore I have been in the same place in the same school with mostly the same people all of my childhood until now. Therefore, here is what I have learned and what some of my friends have learned in only a week.

1.How to not manage time properly -Austin

This one is by far one of my favorite responses I got from my friends. He initially said it jokingly but we all knew he was not joking. In college time can either fly by or seem like forever. Finding time to meet people so that you do not feel lonely in this new world you have put yourself in is hard. It is especially hard when you want to explore the new town you are in or go out but have loads of homework in just the first week.

2.How to be more social -Tate

Being social is a major aspect of making friends in college. It is even a big aspect of getting on the good side of your professor’s. Seeing a whole new variety of people is tough but if you are social it is not near as bad. Most people are accepting of everyone so do not be shy!

3.How to manage time -Austin & Gabrielle

Even though this is the same person who said how not to manage time that is what makes it so great. The truth is that most of us were slacking on managing our time but after the first week we realized how desperate we were for sleep. Sleep is definetly a necessity. You begin to think that you can have fun then do your homework at night but then that 8 am class comes and you realize your mistake.

4.Study skills -Everyone

You may think that you learned how to study in high school but the truth is that you did not. College is a whole new way of studying. You trade in high school teachers to professors who are very intelligent. They may be super intelligent but expect you to teach a lot of it to yourself. If you are good at studying this may come easily but if it does not then the first couple weeks are going to be rough.

5.Friends are good! -Evan

Most of the times the friends you make in college are the friends who will be with you al of your life. Therefore, chose them carefully and have fun. Get close to people. You are stuck with these people for at least 4 years unless you transfer. Having people to hang out with is good because when you do not have homework but have nothing to do you can chill with them. Hanging out with your friends is ultimately lots of fun, a good form of stress relief, and can bring happiness to your day.

Have fun, Study hard! -Summer :)

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
