On Negativity...

Negative energy and negative thoughts are a waste of head space. Yes, they are almost always there; yes, shit happens, but how we choose to look at each of those situations, both collectively and as a whole, is what determines the magnitude of their impact on our lives. Like it or not, there will always be an impact. But the inevitability does not necessarily mean negativity. The impact could cause a crater, yes. But isn't it just as likely that it could create something beautiful? Something we did not know could happen? Who are we to sit in our negativity, to cause ourselves needless struggles and pain, when we could strive to take that negativity and making something positive out of it?

Speaking from personal experience, it is possible to change the way we think and the way we look at the experiences we have lived through. What was once a black mark on our subconscious can be reversed into a clean slate given the right motivations and positive thinking. Not everything can be reversed, but we will never know unless we try. I have spoken with so many who choose to be miserable and choose to wallow. And while sometimes we need to wallow and revel in our own self pity, there comes a point where we need to get out of bed, put on pants, walk out the door, and face a new day. There comes a moment when we need to move on in order to survive. If we let ourselves stay in catatonic states of despair, if we let the negativity rule over all that we are, then we loose ourselves into it and no longer know who we are away from it.

And is that really any way to live? Can we really expect to ever remotely resemble any form of happiness if we cannot shed our negative energies? Is it OK that those times exist? Of course! Those times are important and even needed in order to grow and developed as human beings. But is it worth losing yourself over? No. Everything can be worked through given the right tools and companions to help along the way. Even though we may never be the same again, even though our personalities will be inevitably altered, we get to choose what kind of change that is. We have the opportunity to determine whether or not we are going to let the negativity in a situation take root in our person and become who we are.

Take a photograph, for instance. When you take a photo with a camera, that photo starts out as a negative photo: the colors are distorted and it is hard to imagine a decent picture ever coming out of that mess. However, if all we ever saw of the photograph was the negative, we would miss the beautiful colors that develop over time into the amazing shots we see given time. The same can be said for life. Give it time, and the beauty will begin to show, slowly at first, but will develop into a full fledged picture that is full of color and life. Positivity is everywhere, even in negative situations. All you have to do is look for it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
