For as long as I can remember, I've been a fan of Nintendo. I can recall the day that my brother came to me, explained what Nintendo was cooking up with Pokemon Go and we spent the next few minutes fantasizing and cackling about how cool it would be if Pokemon were real. Because I grew up with a brother, it was almost inevitable that my life would be filled with video games.
Upon hearing that Nintendo was going into the app market for this game, I was a little wary. However, when the game was released I was pretty into it. I feel like the concept of the game working off GPS signal is genius, mainly because in the handheld Pokemon games the player is meant to travel the world to catch different kinds of Pokemon. Although Pokemon Go works entirely different in the means of evolution and battling than a normal Pokemon game, I still believe that it has been a successful innovation. So far, I have had a blast playing the game and learning new features about it every day. It's especially fun to make my childhood dreams of owning my own Pikachu come to life.
That leads me to my next point. I have been a fan of Pokemon since I was eight years old. As I got older, I still held the games and the original 151 close to my heart. During my free time I liked to revert back to my childhood and replay some of the Pokemon games made for handheld devices. When this app was first released, it blew up. I did not expect that to happen, yet I was so happy that people finally started seeing the light about Pokemon and were playing it.
However, after a few weeks I began to realize that there were hundreds of people playing Pokemon Go to be on the same page as everyone else. Some people I work with admitted to me that they didn't even know the names of any of the Pokemon, and they only played as something to do. As someone who has been waiting for this app to launch for over a year, that stung a little bit. It stung even more when the servers were down (from over population of players) just as I was about to leave the house and go on a walk to catch new Pokemon.
I did not want to be that person who said, "I liked Pokemon before it was cool," but hearing things like that I couldn't help it. I'm not saying if you know nothing about Pokemon you shouldn't be playing Pokemon Go. Along with the band-wagoners, I've heard plenty of people genuinely wanting to learn about the game, and even picking up the handhelds to give them a try. That has made me feel extremely pleased and satisfied that Nintendo had the ability and determination to relight the fire in people. I wish that people who are enjoying the game(s) now would have realized it's actually pretty fun before Pokemon Go was released. I didn't like being considered someone who was, "clinging to her past" and was "a total nerd" just because I still enjoyed playing Pokemon at 21 years old.
Overall, I am overjoyed with the success of this app. Nintendo was due for something to go right for them, and I'm glad that people are going crazy over this game. I'm sure that Nintendo has plenty of updates and new features coming out for this game as well. I look forward to playing as well as teaching anyone who wants to learn things about Pokemon.
