My Favorite Color Is Blue

I grew up with my favorite team.

My favorite color is blue, but if we’re talking about specifics, I love teal; this color both have a blue and green spectrum. My childhood and adult (ah, scary) life has changed my mind of what my favorite has been. It has switched from red, to purple, to even lime green.

But, my favorite color is blue because of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. I’ve repped red, white and blue since I met a former Cub at my local mall in third grade. My favorite players were Derek Lee and Sammy Sosa, mainly because they were names that my clever, naive mind could remember.

There’s something that’s called the Cub's curse, because the last time the Chicago cubs won the world series, was in 1904. That was one-hundred and two years ago. Even the movie, "Back to the Future" predicted that we would get to the world series in 2015. Sadly, we did not, but I do believe this year [2016] is our year.

I didn’t start simply liking the Chicago cubs, but I grew up with it; I played catch, because I wanted to be like Kerry Wood or learn to catch a pop-up without being blinded by the sun. Even though the closest thing to playing baseball was playing catch with my dad or cousin, I still loved the connection we had, especially with my dad. I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, and every time the game is on, Wrigley field is always filled.

The seventh inning is always something to look forward to because they have a guest who sings the seventh inning stretch; therefore it is the fun part of the game that people looked forward to. It’s the time that everyone connects and it’s beautiful.

Because of baseball, playing catch was something I always looked forward to when I came home from school and when my dad was home on the weekends. Instead of playing with barbie dolls, I started playing sports and baseball was my, for what you call, my first love of a sport. I was also involved in swimming and basketball for a little bit.

Til this day, I still haven’t been to a cubs game (I know, I know). When you ask me what sport I know best, I’d respond with baseball. It’s one of the only sports I know the rules of, and even though there’s not much action (and is boring to some folks) I enjoy watching it. It’s one of the things that’s close to my heart. My dad and I will always proudly wear the Chicago Cubs.

I’m excited for these next few games. Go Cubs!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
