Working at a summer camp has already been one of the best experiences I have ever had. While I’m only in the first week of camp, through that, and the two weeks of staff training previous to now, I have learned so much about myself and others. I absolutely love what I’m doing. I went to the camp center. I’m working at six years for a music camp! It was an amazing experience being a camper. I decided after that to work as a “staffer” in the kitchen.
Working in a kitchen, especially in an environment like this camp, has been very humbling. People do not realize how much work goes into running the camp (I never did as a camper) until I worked on staff. You realize that these staffers give up their whole summers to work for others, and they would do anything for you. Working in this position has been awesome, because I have gotten to talk to both campers and other staff members about faith, and learned more about my personal faith.
The scenery at this camp is gorgeous, from “the Cove” which is a rocky area by the lake, to the top of the zip line. Everywhere you look there is something beautiful. Taking a walk is always so calming, and you can go literally anywhere on the camp and just see something that makes you smile, from the scenery to the wild life that roams everywhere. There is always something to look at, and it is awesome to have in a walking distance of where you live.
Most camps have many fun activities for both the campers and the staff. During staff training, we had opportunities to climb a rock wall, climb and ride a zip line, and do a “Leap of Faith”. Through camps, there are many fun activities that are held on the weekend while staff is off to do around the area. There is always something to do, and it never is “just work.”
The staff grows so close as a family, having three departments of Maintenance, Program, and Kitchen, sometimes I felt apart from the other departments. However, everyone communicated with each other, we all became friends with each other and continued to grow closer. Staff would always work together and it is never a one for all type thing. The fellow staffers feel like family to me. We all have grown so close and became an awesome community of people who come from different walks of life and different areas. I know I have made some lifelong friends from this place, and I could not be more grateful for them.
Summer camp isn’t what television shows make it look like.
So much goes into each and every week that campers are present. With all the
work put in, you see the results. The smiles on campers faces, those campers
who found a home within the camp, and those who found their friends that they
can trust and rely on through the camp. Working at a summer camp is one of the
most rewarding things I could have ever done. I absolutely love my camp family
and I love everyone that I have met through it. and I would recommend anyone
try it, even just for one summer.
