For a good portion of my life, I was lucky enough to be able to have my own bedroom. The only times I truly had to share my bedroom with another person were the times when my brothers and I were very young and all slept in the same room, when friends spent the night, and on Christmas Eve when my little brother and I had our traditional Christmas Eve sleepover. Aside from that, it's been me, myself, and I for at least the past 12 years. However, this all changed when I moved into my residence hall here at Eastern Michigan University.
To be honest, I was a little nervous about having a roommate at first because I've spent most of my time alone, and I've heard horror stories about roommates. My roommate and I found each other online and talked daily, and then actually ended up accidentally meeting each other before move in. After those two things happened, I get over the nerves very quickly because I knew we were going to be a good pair. Having a roommate comes with a lot more than just sharing a living space with somebody. Here are some of the things you actually get when you get a roommate:
1. A personal stylist.
Getting ready to go somewhere results in these three questions: "Does this look okay?" "Should I wear this one or this one?" and "Should I change something?"
2. A human alarm clock.
Considering we typically have six alarms set between the two of us, one of us is bound to wake up first and give the other one that extra boost to get out of bed.
3. Someone to explore with.
Being in a new city can be intimidating, so it's a good thing you already have someone to go places with.
4. Late night talks.
When you live with someone, late night talks are bound to happen. I feel these are the times when you truly get to know someone.
5. Jam sessions.
On those late nights where we can't seem to fall asleep, we'll go for a drive and blast some music which works out because we have the same exact music taste.
6. Someone to help you remember things.
This can range from reminding each other what time our classes are to remembering to take things with us when we leave. It's become a ritual for us to say "phone, wallet, keys" as we're leaving the room.
7. Someone to binge watch Netflix with.
This is both a blessing and a curse, but it's nice to have someone to watch a show with. We're currently watching Family Guy.
8. Someone to celebrate with.
In my time in college, I've learned that sometimes you have to celebrate even the smallest victories. You went to all your classes this week? You showered today? You didn't let your laundry pile up and smell up the room? Nice work!
9. Someone who looks out for you.
This is mainly apart of human decency, but I definitely think it's heightened when you live someone. We're always checking on each other to make sure we're alright. We even have each other's location on Find my Friends just in case.
It's only the third week and I'm sure as the year goes on, I will have many more things to add to this list. The memories that have been made and that will be made in the future are unlike any others and will last forever.
