Thank You, Mom

I’m so grateful to have you.

Thank You, Mom
Emily Chiriboga

Mom,

There’s so much to thank you for it’s hard to put into words. There’s no way to show you how much I appreciate all that you do for me. You’re my best friend and I know I can always count on you and you won’t judge me. I know that no matter what happens you’d drop everything just to make sure I was OK. Even though I’m not at home anymore, I’m glad we talk at least twice a day. Thank you for listening to every detail about my day even if it was literally the most boring day ever.

I’m so grateful to have you as my mom. We have such a special bond that many mothers and daughters don’t. Thank you for putting up with my attitude even though we both know I got it from you. As much as it pains me to say it, you’re usually right. It’s taken me 21 years to know this but you really do know best. Even though I don’t listen to your advice 80 percent of the time just know that I always appreciate it and in the end, I always think, “Mom was right.”

I know recently I’ve been busy but know that on the days that we can’t talk I miss you. Thank you for making a big deal of all my accomplishments. Sometimes it's something as little as getting a 65 on my math regents or getting into college, you’ve treated it all the same. You’re literally my number-one fan and you make me excited to share the news with you.

Thank you for raising me. If there’s anyone that I can thank for the person I am today it’s you. Thank you for taking care of me when I was grossly sick and you were just as sick. Thank you for those nights I was too scared to sleep and you stayed up to watch TV with me. Thank you for always being my shoulder to cry, hating anyone that caused it and for not being mean when I choose to forgive the person.

I know there're times that we fight but I know it won’t last for more than 30 minutes. I know I’m going to do stupid stuff like do donuts in the parking lot at 2 a.m., or like that time my friend ran away from Pennsylvania at 3 a.m. and pretty much totaled my car but I know you’ll always be there to laugh about it with me. I’d like to say that my “stupid years” are almost over but we still have a few more years so I’m sure there are more memories to be made. I’m sorry for all the times that we’ve fought and all the times that I’ve made you worry.

Thank you for giving me everything I could ever hope for. I know how hard you work to make sure my sister and I get everything we want and more. I don’t know how you always do it but you do. I love you to the moon and back. I would be completely lost without you. You’re the most important women in my life. Thank you for being someone who I can truly look up to in every aspect. You are truly one of the strongest people I know and I’m so proud to call you my mom and always will be.

Love always,

Your daughter

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
