26 Moments Only Swimmers Will Understand

With swim season in full swing this year I thought it would be nice to reflect on all the things that make swimmers swimmers. I am sure I will experience all of the things listed more than once during this season. If you are a swimmer please read and take time to reflect on why you do the crazy sport. If you're not a swimmer…good choice.

Having to wake up at 5:30am for morning practice

Going to school in your pajamas

Never seeing the sunlight during swim season

Having to pack a three-course meal for lunch

Backpack filled with snacks

Diving blocks on shallow ends

Crying in the locker room with your team

Laughing in the locker room with your team

People asking to see your hairy legs

Dead hair from all the chlorine

Dying through dryland

Being excited when your coach announces taper

“Sorry, I can’t hang out I have practice.”

Literally not being able to breathe during sets

Someone saying “It smells like pool” and you automatically know it’s you

Underwater high-fives with the person swimming backstroke next to you

“Take your mark….Stand please” UGH

Finding out you're doing a fly set

Shoulder problems

“Cap me.”

Being upset when you get the best time during practice or a relay

Having songs stuck in your head during a distance set

Meet warm-up being the scariest moments of your life

Cap headaches

Missing school events because of a swim meet

Your team becoming your family

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
