December is great for many reasons such as the holidays, the hype for home, and to count down the days for 2017 to arrive. With Christmas arriving at such a fast pace, January is closer than ever. So let's discuss what we're going to miss about December, shall we?
1. Sweater Weather
This is the TRUE time for sweaters. Fall is the beginning for light “sweaters”, but December is a whole different ball game. Unless you are Frosty the Snowman, the cold is nobody's friend. Sweaters ugly, or cute are fun to wear for holiday sweater parties, but now that the holidays are over there is no use for them other than to keep warm. Which is the point of sweaters, but it's nice to have an occasion for them.
2. The Sales
When there is a holiday there are sales. We all know at this point that the holidays are a great marketing ploy for every department store known to man to shove their "great" deals down our throats. With the holidays are ending, all the stores are either overstocked, or getting way too many returns. Post holiday sales may be even better than the holidays.
3. Snow
Snow has to be hands down one of the best things about December. I have so many memories of school cancellations due to the amount of snow we got. In more recent years, the snow has been coming during the months of January and February (in the north east at least). As a kid, December would be the beginning of the snow day season, and I wish it would be like that again. Regardless of the month, snow is pretty great.
4. Coming Home
Winter break is the time where we can REALLY be home. To just have lazy days chilling in bed, or spending time with your parents. The winter break gives us motivation to get through our finals. After the holidays it may feel as though we have to go back to school, but we still have a few more weeks until we return to school. Which is great, more time for free meals and fun times with old friends.
5. The Songs
At first the Christmas songs are great, but they get old VERY QUICKLY. So if you like constant Christmas songs, good for you! January is a blessing. Goodbye Christmas carols and hello regular radio stations. However, no one can turn down to an epic sing along to All I Want for Christmas is You.
6. The Movies
There are MILLIONS of different holiday movies, but I think the holiday movie marathons are the best. Whether its Home Alone, Elf, The Santa Clause series, or the animated ones such as: The Polar Express, Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer, or Frosty the Snowman- we all have a movie that’s close to our hearts. And when ABC Family does those 12 Days of Christmas Movie Marathon, ugh it hits us right in the childhood feels.
7. All the Specials
Along with the movies every reality show, cartoon, and just fictional show’s has their holiday special. Some shows like Family Guy, Simpsons, and Spongebob have either one that they repeat, or multiple specials that they show every year. It’s pretty fun to look forward too, considering that it's only shown a few times every year. Pretty exciting stuff.
8. Nutcracker Season
For non-performing arts fans all the Nutcracker music and advertising for the expensive recitals can be quite annoying. However, for those who enjoy seeing it every year, it’s a great tradition to have. For those performing in the Nutcracker this means they can finally perform what they have been rehearsing since August! The Nutcracker is an intensive show to be apart of, but at the end of the day it’s a rewarding show to be apart of. And when it's Nutcracker season, you know it's winter.
9. Secret Santa

10. The Holidays
This one quite obvious, everyone is looking forward to spend the holidays with their family. It’s all the hype for December, if we didn’t have Hanukkah or Christmas in December, what is there to be excited about?
All said and done, there is so much more to include for December. There is putting up the Christmas, or Hanukkah decorations. The neighborhood competition for the best outdoor decorations (and there’s that one asshole who goes all out with decorating the pine tree, YEAH YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE).
Regardless with our love for December, January should we welcomed with open arms because 2016 is officially thrown in the trash, and 2017 is delivered to us in a golden platter. Thank GOD for the new year.
