The truth about vocational education

Vocational/ Technical high schools are all over the country, giving their students both a high school education along with diplomas in a career field. This sounds incredible (and it is), but many people look down on these schools and the students who attend them. Here are some of the biggest misconceptions about vocational education.

1. Only "dumb" people go

To go to a vocational school, you must apply and the application isn't as simple as you think. Applicants must get recommendations and meet certain grade and school requirements. Once in the school, you need to do your work in your normal education classes as well as your trade classes, which isn't easy for young teenagers to do. You need to work hard to get into these schools.

2. You don't get a "real education"

Vocational schools may not have all the electives and advanced classes that normal high schools do, but that doesn't mean the students aren't getting a proper education. These students take the same state mandated tests and are required to learn the same topics, in half the time since the other half is spent learning their trade.

3. You aren't close with your teachers

Vocational schools give you both regular academic teachers as well as shop teachers who have worked in your trade. Being with these teachers for long periods of time gives you the opportunity to really connect with them. This connection can also happen with academic teachers too!

4. Nobody goes to them anymore

Many people think "trades" aren't a popular thing anymore, but that is not the case! Getting a free education in a trade is an amazing thing that many people take! Many of these schools have mile long (well not a mile) waiting lists for people dying to get in.

5. You can't get a good job

These schools aim at giving students the knowledge and skills to get jobs upon graduation as well as the idea of continuing their education to get an even higher level job. Many of these schools also have classes on entrepreneurship to give its students knowledge on possibly owning their own business.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
