The holiday season is officially here! Sales are in full force, Holiday Christmas music can be heard on your local radio station, and the lights and magic of the season are beginning to surround us. However, there is one group of people who dread the holiday season and who are not usually cheerful during the holiday season- retail employees.
Many people seem to forget the hard work retail employees put in during the last 6 weeks of the year. If they did not postpone their Thanksgiving dinner for example, Black Friday would not be possible. In fact, most of your inexpensive Christmas shopping and all other material sources of your holiday joy would not be possible if it were not for the long hours and work these individuals put into their respective places of employment. So in the spirit of the holiday, here are a couple of friendly reminders:
Be Mindful
This just comes down to common decency. Please be mindful about how you leave tables, racks, and other areas where merchandise is sold. No one wants to spend an hour folding shirts and come back from break to see them all over the floor. Yes, store employees are paid to keep the store organized but they are not paid nearly enough to pick up after careless, messy, and inconsiderate people. Oh, and on that note, please…
Be Approachable
By the third week of December retail employees have already put in a handful 10+ hour shifts, dealt with angry irate customers, and probably have no idea what day of the week it actually is. So please, keep that in mind before you start taking out all of your frustration on them. Nothing good comes out of yelling at an employee because the toy your child really wanted is no longer in stock. Anger will not make the toy appear any faster and it’s not really the employee’s fault you waited until December 23rd to come and buy it.
