The Mid-Semester Slump: Let's Get Through This

We all know how it goes: the mid-semester slump with spring break a few weeks away, summer break just a bit further away and the only thing going through your head is how the hell you are going to survive. You're starting to drown in the everyday schedule of classes, work, meetings, practice and everything else that goes on in the daily life on a college student. Oh yeah, can't forget how annoying the coldness of winter is getting. Let's be honest, all you really want is to lay in bed all day with a pint of Ben & Jerrys and watch "Parks and Recreation" and avoid any bit of responsibility you might have. But sadly, you just can't.

So you sit here asking, how you will survive, how will you get through this slump and make it to spring break? I'll try to help you out:

1. Sleep

Sleep is the most important thing to make it through this dreadful time. Being mentally and physically exhausted will only make waking up and going to classes that much harder. Getting a full nights rest is the first step in the mid-semester slump recovery.

2. Binge watch "Saturday Night Live"

There is no better way to cheer yourself up then by watching "Saturday Night Live" clips. But seriously, I'm not kidding; do it. Here are two clips to get you started on this binge that will change your life for the better.

3. Reorganize your room

Nothing feels better than the feeling of a fresh, clean, organized room. Take a Sunday afternoon, blast some good music and declutter your life by cleaning out your room. Get rid of unwanted and unneeded items. The sooner you do this, the easier it'll be to reorganize yourself for the remainder of the semester.

4. Get things done and treat yo' self

Make a list, stick to the list, cross things of the list and get things done. Accomplish those things, and when you do, treat yo' self. Simple as that.

5. Have a movie and wine night

Grab your friends, your favorite movies and stay in. Get your favorite wine, snacks and pizza. Put on your comfiest clothes and your warmest blankets and get your butt on the couch. Have a night in with your favorite people, flicks and things to eat and drink, and you will be feeling more mentally refreshed than ever before.

6. Keep on grinding

The end is near, and just like every other college kid out there, keep on grinding.

We all know the mid-semester slump is the worst thing to happen to a college kid, but just remember we are all in this together, and if we just believe in each other, we can all make it through. Keep on, keepin' on.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
