Last week, as a political act of scrutiny, Trump banned the press credentials of the Washington Post, stating they "are dishonest and phony" because of a headline they posted regarding comments Trump made in response to Obama's reaction to the Orlando massacre. This was not the first time Trump banned journalists who do not show him in the Godly, bright and squeaky clean manner he expects to be viewed. The Post joined the ranks of other blacklisted news organizations: Gawker, BuzzFeed, Foreign Policy, Politico, Fusion, Univision, Mother Jones, the New Hampshire Union Leader, the Des Moines Register, the Daily Beast and Huffington Post.
Essentially, what this means is that representatives from these organizations cannot attend Trump's campaign events to cover them. There have been attempts made by journalists, most recently one from Politico, who have tried to attend with a normal ticket and report from the event but were thrown out. However, this ban has not and will not stop The Post from reporting on Trump.
What does this mean in the greater scheme of things? How about seriously thinking about the repercussions our country will face if this bigot is voted into the Oval Office. Trump knows no boundaries. He is a reckless vigilante who will stop at nothing to mold this country into how he sees it best fit (for him). This could mean many struggles to come for those of us who feel unaffected by current laws and regulations.
By removing the press credentials of news organizations, taking away the American right of free press, Trump is creating tunnel vision for the public. We are only being allowed to see what he wants us to see, to hear what he wants us to hear, and think what he wants us to think. We are being muzzled - our voices do not matter to him if we do not agree with him. First there is a call to ban Muslims from entering the U.S., to cowardly and indirectly accusing our current President of siding with "Radical Islamists".
What do you think will happen if he becomes the next leader of our not so free world? I will tell you what I see - 1930s Germany. I see our country coming undone, divided and segregated on so many levels. I see punishment coming to those of us who are the voices and future of our generation. I see so many things that scare the shit out of me. Trump's actions are just a preview of what our country has to face. Do not let our country make the greatest mistake in history, by allowing something so destructive to happen that we have the power to prevent.
As Millennials, we are the most populous, educated, connected, informed and hopeful people in our country. By banding together, we have the power to choose the direction of our country's future. Our voices impact, infiltrate and influence modern politics and society. Do you want to lose your right of freedom, right of an education, the right to be who you want, to right to come and go in and out of this country as you please? Do you want to lose your ability to ask questions? Or to no longer be able to be informed about what is really going on behind the scenes of the most historic presidential campaign our country has witnessed? We have the ability to choose our outcome.
Use your voice, advocate, fight for what you believe, and never stop. We will not succumb to Trump's bullying ways. Together, let's be the change we wish to see in America.
