We all know that college is not an easy task. Stress, mental breakdowns, and no sleep are big factors that occur in school. Seems pretty hectic if you ask me. Try adding depression or anxiety into the mix. Complete chaos. All school work pilled up and the amount of assignments to do can create negativity and emotions. Like many students, I struggle with anxiety and depression. During the school year, that is probably the most stressful time. Anxiety and depression tend to be the most common issues with college students. It can get out of hand and if neither illness is being handled accordingly, it can cause bad things to happen. For example your grades can drop. That alone can create more problems. Here are some tips that I use in my life that I do to ease everything.
1. Sleep. Sleep. Sleep
Sleeping is what we all do. However, if you're like me and have insomnia-traits it can be hard to go and stay asleep. I run around all day and barely eat but I will make sure I sleep as much as I can. Nap if you are able to. My definition of a nap is about 2-3 hours.
2. Use Campus Resources
Majority of colleges offer resources that will help students who suffer from mental health illnesses. Counselors are available as well as group counseling. The hardest part would be to actually go but whenever you take that first step and overcome your nerves, it'll make a difference.
3. Talk to Someone
Vent your thoughts and feelings. It can be anyone. A family member, friend, or therapist gives you the opportunity to relieve your stress and take the burden off your shoulders. It could benefit your mental health.
College students go through so much. It’s important to utilize what is available and promote mental health wellness. Be sure to take that first step and go on the path to recovery.
