As I walk into the most coveted dorm on campus, Minnich Hall, I mindlessly enter my friend's room to ask if anyone in there wants to grab some dinner. Before I can even pop the question, my eyes immediately spot the multiple colors of puffy paint and cheap wine glasses sitting on the carpet.
"Sweet Lord," I say to myself. "Big/Little Week" approaches us and I cannot think of anything worse than crafting meaningless trinkets to hang on the sand colored walls of Minnich Hall or my future "leeetttleee." Don't get me wrong I love my sorority, but TBH I cannot think of anything more heinous than posting a picture of me and my future little on Instagram with matching "Biggie Smalls" shirts captioned, "She is perfect." And the fact that those shirts have not been banned from sororities everywhere is beyond me. (Side note: we are also "throwing what we know" in this photo).
I think some people spend more time on big little week than any exam they will ever take. Like its awesome to get baskets of candy and signs, but at some point all that will matter is the person getting them. Now, my big is the best, and I can't imagine her spending more than 20 minutes on the baskets she threw together for me. That is also because she's totally chill and totally not a sorority girl.
I don't want my little to like me based on how many likes our Instagram gets, or how many shirts I give her. I want my little to like me 'cause we're actually friends, not because everyone knows were "perfect together" and she's "the one." I want our relationship to go beyond the surface. I want us to actually talk, not for people to think we talk.
Hopefully my little will know me well enough to understand that crafts are the last thing from me and I probably won't advertise our "family" via social media. However, what she will know is that I will get food with her any day of the week, and probably be making worse life decisions despite my authority-type position.
Future little, if you are reading, take this as an apology in advance. I probably won't have many crafts and the shirts I give you might have sweat stains. But if you are "meant for me," you won't care and probably wouldn't wear the shirt anyways.
I'm not perfect, and I know that I can change my life drastically in so many areas. But if any of this big little nonsense pertains to you, I'd take my advice and stop being the girl that I unfollow for being so obnoxious about big little week on Instagram (they exist).
