Politics—the topic that can drive friendships, relationships, and even families apart.
I first started taking interest in politics in 2008 when Obama won his first term. Why then? Because that’s when I discovered the harsh reality of what it meant to be left leaning in the south. I had to know politics because I got ridiculed every day for believing in Obama, and I needed to understand what I was talking about
Fast-forward two terms later and here we are, in the first election I can vote in. I’ll be honest; it is not at all how I pictured it. This election is all over the place and quite frankly, it’s terrifying.
I, personally, felt the Bern and stood proudly with the political revolution. But as the primaries will soon come to a close, it is clear that Bernie will not receive the nomination, which is absolutely OK. As much as I love Bernie (can he please be my totally badass grandpa?), Hillary has been groomed for this spot for the past eight years. The political revolution was amazing and created a platform that both Hillary and Trump will have to work with because the people know what they want.
Now, it’s time to get serious, America. I felt the Bern, but now #IStandWithHer, and here’s why: Yes, Benghazi was a terrible attack that should have never happened, but Clinton did take responsibility for it. Yes, having a private server for email does come off as shady, but there is no more wiggle room. We have Clinton, an experienced politician, and Trump (or Drumpf as I like to call him), a reality TV star, a “businessman” who has filed for bankruptcy four times, and an orange with a cotton candy toupee and hands the size of an infant.
I have many friends who have said things to me like “Well, I hate both candidates, but it looks like I’m going to have to vote for Trump! He’s not great, but at least he’s not a criminal like Hillary.” Really? If you support Trump, you support xenophobia, racism, misogyny and homophobia, just to name a few.
Someone asked me, “I just don’t get it, why do minorities hate Trump? They have no reason to.” Let's see, he wants to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it, he wants to block Muslims from entering our country and the list just keeps going.
Please, for the love of God, read the facts. Out of 170 Trump facts checked, Politifact says only 23 percent of them were true, mostly true or half true, while 77 percent of them were mostly false, false or pants on fire. Meanwhile out of 215 Clinton facts checked, 72 percent were some varying degree of true while only 27 percent were some degree of false. The facts show that Trump will lie way more often than he will tell the truth (only four facts of 170 were entirely true), is that really what we as a country want as our president? Obama has 583 facts checked in his Politifact file currently, and from that number 75 percent of them are some degree of truth. Would you rather have someone who tells the truth three out of four times or someone who only tells the truth one out of four times?
Clinton is not perfect, but she is better than Trump. If you are voting Trump simply because of the email scandals, shame on you. The rest of the world is laughing at us and is terrified for us because of the GOP front-runner. He has been praised by North Korea, endorsed by the KKK and tweets whatever comes to mind like a 16-year-old girl. If that doesn’t put up a red flag for you, I don’t know what will.
For my future, for my children’s and my grandchildren’s, vote for the one who will honestly keep our country on the up and up instead of the one who will tank us. Since Obama took office the unemployment rate has dropped 5 percent, which is below the historical median, the amount of petroleum imported has gone down by 62 percent, and over 9 million jobs have been added. We need to continue this progress over the next four years, and Clinton will do that.
So, let’s really make America great again and stand with her.
