It had started with a simple word, followed by a small gesture. I wished, however, that I wasn’t the only one to witness it.
“Stop,” her voice slammed into my brain, making me come to an immediate halt. I had nearly lost my keys in the process. Turning to the strange women beside me, I eyed her figure.
But with more appreciation than a happily dating man should.
In her hands was a phone, one of those new products everyone was raving about. supposivly it had surpassed the iPhone, Android and any other smartphone on the market.
“That’s not mine,” I stated, turning back towards the empty parking lot.
“Take it,” she stepped in front of me, shoving the phone into my hands. My eyes fell to its sleek figure, and I grasped it intending to shove it back but when I looked up…
… she was gone. I didn’t even see her walking away anywhere.
I don’t have time for this, I merely shook my head. Tossing the phone to the ground, I hurried towards the car and jumped in. Speeding off, I had made it home where Jenny, my wonderful girlfriend sat waiting.
“Nice of you to show up,” she called from the kitchen, the sound of dishes clanging in the sink. “I almost thought I was going to celebrate our five year anniversary by myself…”
“Never,” I relished, kissing the back of her head. I patted my pocket, finding the ring box still there securely, but another lump still in there. Reaching in I fished out the phone yet again.
“How did,” I began, looking at its face yet again.
“Is that why you were late?” She noticed the phone, an odd look flashing on her face only to dissolve into questioning. “Did you need a new one?”
“No mine is...” I checked my back pocket. “... not here.”
“Well, who cares?” she smiled at me, but it was tight. “Let’s have dinner. I made your favorite; Parmesan Chicken with french cut green beans.”
“Yes,” I fist pumped into the air. “Have I told you I love you lately?”
“Yes, now sit down.”
As we started our way into our food, I did the classic down on one knee, open ring box and exclamation of my love. She squealed and said yes. But it was then the mysterious phone in my pocket began to buzz. Without considering, I kissed my new fiancee and answered the phone.
He pulled the phone out of his pocket and answered it. I didn’t have time to grab it from his pocket. The phone exploded in his hand, shards of it hitting every surface while some embedded into my skin. Blood began to pour down the side of his head, brain matter exposed to the air as he fell limp to the floor.
“Ethan,” I called. “Ethan, can you hear me?”
He was silent.
The ambulance couldn’t make it in time. And I didn’t want to expose myself.
But Its not like I really had a choice.
Running to the cabinet in the pantry that I kept lock, I busted it open and pulled the book from the very back. Back in the kitchen, I tossed it open on the floor and looked for the strongest spell I could manage on such short notice.
And so the spell began...
But he died anyways.
