Usually on the first day of class people are too flustered to try and make a best friend. Searching for buildings with weird names, not knowing where the elevator is, buying textbooks at the bookstore, learning how to drop that horrible science class with the scary professor; there can be a lot to do on the first day. The most important thing I did on my first day was meeting my best friend.
On the first day of classes last year, I met my soul sister. How'd we meet? I'll tell you how. On the first day of classes I had some down time so I found a bench near the class I was early for. I didn't want to be 30 minutes early by myself... I sat and waited, and waited, and waited some more. All of a sudden, I see a girl in front of me. It was her! My future best friend (at the time).
I was a little caught off guard, because I was alone, I distracted myself with my new textbook for a class I was going to later on that day. She introduced herself- "Hi! I'm Madi. What's your name?". We hit it off that morning so well during our 10 minute conversation. Right away I knew she was my kind of friend. The beginning of our beautiful friendship.
It might not sound all that exciting to you, but, it is special. Our generation is so distracted by technology that we have lost touch with what is real and authentic. My best friend was brave that day. Now it is so rare that people come up to me and start a conversation, other than at social events, on their own. People are also usually shocked when I do it to them. I would like to commemorate my best friend for doing this. She put herself out there when she came up to me that day.
If I have any advice for people starting their college careers, it is to put yourself out there and talk to a random person on your first day of classes. You might even make a best friend.
