On Monday, September 26th, 2016, Hillary Clinton, in a fiery-red pantsuit, and Donald Trump, in a thoughtful-blue tie, took to the stage for the very first time. The two bravely manned their podiums, anticipating a barrage of challenging questions. Lester Holt, debate moderator, would soon ask questions covering policy, race, temperament, disposition and more. Debate season was in full swing.
Before Monday's debate, anti-Hillary proponents labeled Secretary Clinton "untrustworthy," and reiterated that theme every opportunity they chanced. After Monday's debate, they have a bit of explaining to do, because Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, lied at least 58 times during the first debate. Here are eight of the most outrageous...
1. Donald Trump lied when he denied saying that climate change was a hoax invented by the Chinese.
2. Donald Trump lied when he claimed he was against the war in Iraq.
In 2002, before the war, Howard Stern asked Trump whether or not he was for "invading Iraq." Trump responded: "Yeah, I guess so."
Lester Holt, 2016 presidential debate moderator, asked Trump: "What makes your judgement..." before he was cut off. Later, he would ask what had changed Trump's position on the war in Iraq years later. Adamantly, Trump rebutted: "I did not support the war in Iraq. That is a mainstream media nonsense put out by her [Hillary Clinton]." In 2002, he did.
3. Donald Trump lied when he denied ever saying women do not deserve equal pay.
During a rally at No Labels, a young woman named Lauren Batchelder, asked Trump: "If you become president, will a woman make the same as a man?" He responded: "You're going to make the same if you do as good a job." It sounds like Trump assumes men always do the better job, and that women ought to strive for that standard of "superior performance" set by men. Who determines whether or not a woman "does as good a job" as her male counterparts? A man? What happens if a woman surpasses her male colleagues in performance? Should they be paid less? Is it even possible for a woman to out-perform a man in Trump's twisted reality? Perhaps not.
4. Donald Trump lied when he claimed New York City's old stop and frisk policy was not ruled unconstitutional.
In its height, the old stop and frisk policy targeted, almost exclusively, young black and/or Latino men. The New York Times documents a change in policy in 2013: "During the mayoralty of Mr. Bloomberg, the number of reported stops skyrocketed, but then was scaled back as the city faced pressure from the class-action litigation, brought by the New York Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights. By the end of 2013, the year Shira A. Scheindlin, the federal judge hearing the case, ruled that the city’s wholesale search practices violated the Constitution, the number of stops had declined by 72 percent from its peak in 2011."
5. Donald Trump lied when he said Hillary Clinton has been fighting ISIS her entire adult life.
Trump also claims that Obama and Hillary deserve blame for the Muslim terror group's surge in 2011 because of their "messy" withdrawal from Iraq. ISIS really took shape in 2004 when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi gained control. From there, Abu Ayyub al-Masri acquired power shortly following al-Zarqawi's death in a US airstrike. Four years later, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi took control and rebranded the group: ISIS. In retrospect, ISIS as we know it has only existed recently...not for the past 50 years.
6. Donald Trump lied when he said he does not mind publicly releasing his tax returns.
Evidently, Trump thinks exploiting tax loopholes makes him smart. It sounds like he's admitted to paying very little, if any, in federal income taxes. It also sounds like he only cares about promoting big-business and avoiding paying his fair share.
According to fortune.com, "Every major party candidate since Richard Nixon in 1972 has made their returns public before election day...In most cases, candidates make their filings public around tax time in April, before their conventions and several months prior to the election. The only Republican or Democratic candidate to release after the convention was Mitt Romney in 2012." A "pro-longed" audit is no excuse, so what has he got to hide?
7. Donald Trump lied when he said Hillary Clinton wants to avoid using the terms "law and order."
No, she was just answering Lester Holt's question with substance. "Law and order" isn't a policy or a plan. Please elaborate, Mr. Trump.
8. Donald Trump lied when he denied saying pregnancy was an inconvenience.
