Valentine’s Day has been and always will be a notorious holiday. While loved by most candy stores and flower shops, it’s a holiday dreaded by every single person out there who is spending it alone. For all of the single guys and gals, Valentine’s Day seems to act solely as a reminder that the only person buying them flowers or chocolates is their mother.
Although spending Valentine’s Day without a significant other seems like the end of the world, I promise it’s not. What most people don’t realize is that even though it would be nice to go on a fancy date or receive a teddy bear the size of your car, many times, this day is just a recipe for disaster. Valentine’s Day is so hyped up by the media and movies, but it’s really just another day for the lover in our lives to not live up to our expectations. The only people that loathe Valentine’s Day more than the single population are the four girls below, including myself.
“My junior year of high school, I entered into a new relationship on Feb. 10, 2012. I was still getting over my ex who had dumped me for another girl, but also enjoying the time I was spending with my new boyfriend. For Valentine’s Day, he brought me red roses to school and told me he was going to take me to my favorite restaurant for dinner later that night. I was so excited because I knew this meant hibachi. To his surprise (not mine), you can’t just show up unannounced to a nice restaurant on Feb. 14... needless to say, we ended up at Chili’s. About ten minutes into our meal another couple was seated next to us. I took a huge bite of my mediocre salad and looked up to my ex and his new girlfriend standing two feet away. I ate as fast as I could, grabbed the check, and bolted!”

“On our second Valentine’s Day, my boyfriend and I planned to dine at our favorite restaurant by the water. As we were about to leave for our reservation, his roommate walks out of his room wearing a cowboy hat with some heinous boots and said "I really appreciate y’all invitin' me to dinner." But that wasn't the worst part. When we got to the restaurant, his roommate invited a Tinder date to join us. She showed up 20 minutes later wearing ripped denim shorts, a butterfly tank top, bright blue eye shadow, and some cowgirl boots. She chewed bubblegum loudly and flirted with my boyfriend (at least he was smart enough not to flirt back). We're still together but he won't be making that mistake EVER again.”

“My boyfriend and I had been dating for about a year at the time, and we were really into each other. He was always very spontaneous, so come Valentine’s Day, I wasn’t surprised that he didn’t mention our plans ahead of time. Well, around 7 p.m. that night, my ex-boyfriend called me saying he saw my boyfriend out with another girl. I wasn’t sure if I believed him, so I took it into my own hands and texted him asking what our Valentine’s Day plans were. He nonchalantly replied and said he was on a date with another girl. He called me and genuinely didn’t know why I was so upset, so I broke up with him right then and there. He freaked out and didn’t get why he couldn’t still be my boyfriend… safe to say we aren’t together anymore.”

“I was going out on one of my first Valentine's Day date ever, so I was pretty excited. My boyfriend and I went and got some Hibachi and exchanged presents (we got each other like the exact same things... slightly awkward but really cute.) After dinner, we went to see "Valentine's Day" the movie. I'm not a nighttime person at all, so when we went to a 10:30 showing, I fell asleep five minutes in and woke up to the credits playing. As we walked out of the movie theatre he said to me "I'm not going to pay 10 dollars for you to nap so I can watch a movie by myself." He broke up with me right then and there... Talk about an awkward drive home.”
